The Cape Cod Baseball League has finalized the 2006
schedule. Each team's full 44 game calendar is
available at the Cape League's website HERE.
The A's will open the 2006 campaign at home against the Falmouth Commodores of
the West Division on Thursday, June 16th at 7pm. Falmouth finished in third
place in the 2005 season, but won the West Division pennant in 2004 after
starting that season 0-5. Falmouth tied in the 2005 opener against Wareham, 3-3 after 15 innings of baseball.
Chatham lost on opening day last season,
6-3 at Harwich.
Historically, the Athletics have scheduled the season opener against the
Harwich Mariners. The last time a season opening game was scheduled against a
team other than Harwich was in the 1999 season when Chatham defeated the Y-D Redsox, 6-2. However, in the 2002 season, the scheduled
opener for Chatham vs. Harwich was postponed because of fog and Game 2
against Y-D was postponed because of rain. Therefore, Chatham's third scheduled game became its
first, ironically against Falmouth, a 4-4 tie.
After Game 1 at home, Chatham goes on the road for back to back 5pm games -
first to Yarmouth and then to the newly constructed field in Brewster at the
Stony Brook School. Home games against Harwich and Y-D finish off a stretch of
four consecutive games against East Division teams before the first off-day on
Tuesday, June 20th. Following the off-day, the A's travel to Hyannis to take on the Mets under newly
installed stadium lighting. The Mets had played under the lights from 1983 to
1993 until the ospreys descended on the McKeon park light towers. Chatham will get a look at the other new Cape League field on June 29th; the Bourne Braves
new home was designed by students from the Upper Cape Tech School, the site of the new field.
The A's first meet arch rival Orleans at Eldredge Park on Monday, June 26th at 7pm. The annual Independence Day home
and home series starts in Orleans on Monday, July 3rd with the 4th
of July game at Chatham's Veterans Field. The A's and
Cardinals battled nine times during the 2005 season, with Orleans taking four of six regular season matchups and two of three in the East Division Championship
Series. Chatham finished three points behind Orleans for the best record in the Cape League. In 2005, the Orleans Cardinals
and the Chatham A's shared the Lower Cape Silver Award for Best Kids' Activity
in the Cape Cod Life 2005 Best of the Cape & Islands Readers' Poll with
both organizations racking up the top two average attendance numbers, each more
than double the next highest team.
The 2006 Cape League All-Star Game will take place at Yarmouth's Red Wilson Field on Saturday,
July 29th. Chatham sent an unprecedented eight players to the 2005 East vs.
West battle. The Cape League reported more than 100 media and
scout packets given out at the 2005 game at McKeon Park in Hyannis.
After the 2006 All-Star break, the A's finish off the regular season with five
of six games against East Division teams: two each against Y-D and Brewster
plus the season finale at Orleans. The Division Championship Series
begin on Tuesday, August 8th.
