A's Walk Off With Second Straight
On the heels of their second win of the season Saturday in Brewster, the A's won back-to-back games for the first time this season, defeating the Falmouth Commodores 6-5 at Veterans Field Sunday night. Devin Lohman was the star for the A's. The Long Beach State second baseman drove in three runs, stole two bases and scored two runs. His first two runs batted in came in the 2nd inning, when he skyed Rex Brothers's pitch down the right field line. Ryan Jones' dive came up short, allowing J.R. Higley and Dylan Brown to score. Lohman drove in his third run in the fourth inning with a single down the first base line. Victor Sanchez then ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Grant Green and Lohman. This drove Brothers from the game, as the Commodores called on Chris Gloor with Chatham up 5-0.
Making his first start of the season for Chatham, UCLA righty Charles Brewer was effective before running into trouble in the 5th inning. Daren Ruf's RBI single ended Brewer's night with the A's up 5-1, as John Schiffner summoned Carmine Giardina from the bullpen. The first batter the Central Florida righty faced was Jimmy Cesario, who hit a fly to left that dropped for a hit when Higley slipped on the outfield grass allowing two runs to score and cut the Chatham lead to two.
Still ahead 5-3 in the 7th, Joey Wong reached first on a strikeout and wild pitch. Trevor Coleman hit a double-play grounder that took a crazy high hop and ticked off Devin Lohman's glove for an error. With two on and no one out, Ruf walked. Cesario brought in a run with a fielder's choice grounder allowing Wong to score. Trevor Coleman tied the game, scoring on a Kevin Nolan safety squeeze bunt.
With the game tied at 5, after Chris Gloor gave up one hit over 4.1 innings, Ben Tootle was called upon to move the game to extra innings. Tootle dominated the A's Thursday night, but Sunday his control escaped him. Walks to Devin Lohman and Aaron Miller put the winning run in scoring position. When Tootle uncorked a wild pitch to Victor Sanchez, Lohman moved to 3rd. Tootle then gave Sanchez an intentional free pass, bringing pinch hitter Evan Ocheltree to the plate. Ocheltree battled with Tootle, fouling off pitches as he worked the count full, before Tootle missed high with ball four on the eighth pitch ot Ocheltree. Lohman was forced home on the play and the A's won 6-5.
Jeff Lorick evened his record at 1-1 on the season with two shutout innings, while Ben Tootle takes his first loss. The A's look to make it three in a row Monday night against the two-time defending champion Y-D Red Sox. Long Beach's Jake Thompson will take the mound for the A's, with broadcast coverage beginning at 6:40 with the A's Extra pregame show.
