Green Paces Win Over Former Team
On the heels of an extra inning loss to Cotuit Tuesday night, the A's bounced back with an impressive 5-2 win over the Y-D Red Sox on Wednesday at Red Wilson Field. Grant Green starred as the USC shortstop returned to Yarmouth for the first time since spending the 2007 summer with the league champion Red Sox. He didn't do it alone, however. Sammy Solis was sharp once again, allowing just one earned run through six innings. The San Diego lefthander allowed an unearned run in the fourth, as Kyle Seager bobbled Tony Sanchez's grounder to second, scoring Ryan Ortiz. It could've been worse, but Kyle Bellows threw home as Sean Ochinko tried to score a second run on the play, ending the inning. The Red Sox scored once more in the 6th, as Ochinko's sacrifice fly scored Keenan Wiley.
With Solis on his way out, the A's bats picked a perfect opportunity to heat up. Denied a run in the bottom of the fifth when Corey Overholtzer was initially ruled safe at third, allowing Gregg Glime to score before the call was reversed, and Overholtzer was the third out of the inning, the A's left no doubt in the 7th. Overtholtzer singled, and after Green and Cory Olson had singled, Kyle Seager stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Seager had struggled early on, committing a costly error earlier in the game and going 0-3 at the plate. But when called upon, he stepped up, singling up the middle to score Overholtzer. The throw from centerfielder Whit Merrifield was poor, allowing Grant Green to score and tie the game. Victor Sanchez was walked to load the bases, and Evan Ocheltree came to the plate. After being signed to a permanent contract earlier in the day to replace the injured Dylan Brown, Ocheltree delivered, as he hustled down the line to beat out a ground ball, scoring Olson with the third run of the inning.
With the lead, John Schiffner handed the ball to his newest toy, North Carolina righty Matt Harvey. The standout freshman was dominant, allowing just two hits in his two innings of work. Grant Green led off the 9th with a home run to centerfield, his fourth hit of the evening. The A's tacked on one more, as Cory Olson singled, eventually scoring on an RBI single from Kyle Bellows.
One night after suffering his first loss of the season, Brad Boxberger was back to his usual self. The Southern Cal righty showed no mercy, striking out the Red Sox in order to end the ballgame and lock up his league-leading 6th save of the season. Sammy Solis improves to 3-0, while the A's record climbs to 7-9. They'll return to Veterans Field on Thursday to host the Falmouth Commodores at 7.
