Faced with the prospect of two doubleheaders over the final five days of the regular season, the last thing that the A's wanted against the Y-D Red Sox on Sunday was a lengthy extra innings affair, but that is exactly what transpired at Veterans Field, as it took the Red Sox thirteen innings to defeat the A's, 2-0. The first eight innings were showcases for the two starting pitchers: Chatham's Kevin Couture and Y-D's Craig Fritsch. Both turned in nearly identical lines, as they each threw eight shutout innings, allowing only three hits. Couture was the first to give way, as Matt Harvey entered in the ninth, and struck out the first two batters he faced on just six pitches. DeAngelo Mack doubled into the leftfield corner, where Evan Ocheltree overran the ball, allowing Mack to take third. Harvey was not bothered, as he struck out the next batter.

Chatham had a good chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning against Joe Kelly. With two on and two out, Joe Mercurio hit a sharp ground ball to second base. A diving stop by Tom Belza prevented the ball from going through. Belza was unable to get any outs initially, but saw that Ocheltree had taken too big of a turn around third base. The Sox trapped Ocheltree in the rundown and tagged him out, ending the inning. Chatham had another good scoring opportunity in the eleventh with runners at the corners, but Ocheltree hit into an inning-ending double play, and the game continued.

As the game moved to the twelfth, Joe Serafin came on to pitch for Chatham. In the top of the thirteenth, he ran into trouble. With one out, Tyler Marmion grounded to short, but a poor throw from Grant Green sailed over Kyle Bellows and allowed Marmion to take second. Keenan Wiley walked, and Josh Rutlege then singled, loading the bases. Catcher Ryan Ortiz worked a full count before drawing a walk, bringing in Marmion with the game's first run. The Red Sox added an insurance run as the next batter, DeAngelo Mack, hit a ball to first that Kyle Bellows misplayed, allowing Wiley to score.

Rhett Ballard worked quickly in the bottom of the thirteenth, as he struck out the side to earn his third win of the year, and second against Chatham. The A's have little time to lick their wounds, as they face a doubleheader on Monday. In a makeup of Thursday evening's fogout, they travel to Whitehouse Field to take on the Harwich Mariners at 2.
