Anglers Bats Come Alive
One night after suffering their first loss of the season, the Chatham Anglers mounted a successful comeback against Wareham and rallied to a 5-4 victory in ten innings.
Wareham got off to an early lead in the second inning with three consecutive hits off Chatham starter and Oklahoma State Cowboy Thomas Keeling. The third hit, a single by designated hitter Chris Hannick, scored Cole Leonida. Two batters later a Shea Vucinich groundout scored Jake Lemmerman to make it 2-0 Wareham.
After Chatham's Tom Belza knocked in Matt Duffy in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit in half, it was more of the same in the top of the third inning for the Gatemen. Cole Leonida and Jake Lemmerman both scored again thanks to Chris Hannick's two-RBI single that made it 4-1 Wareham. Keeling settled down after the third and gave Anglers fans a taste of the strikeout potential he has. In the fourth inning he registered three straight backwards K's to complete the 1-2-3 inning. Then in the fifth he retired all three batters with a popout, a strikeout and a groundout.
Meanwhile, Wareham's Josh Mueller dealt six solid innings of one-run ball and totaled 101 pitches. He was set to pick up his first victory until the bullpen let him down.
Pete Kennelly came on in relief of Keeling and continued his early season success for the Anglers. The Fordham hurler missed all of the 2009 season due to Tommy John surgery and is pitching competitively for the first time since the middle of the 2008 college baseball year. The redshirt senior pitched a scoreless sixth, seventh, and eighth to make it a total of five innings of scoreless baseball on the season.
While Kennelly kept Chatham in the game, the Anglers were unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position until the tide turned in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tom Belza, batting in the nine-hole, smacked a double down the rightfield line to lead off the home half of the inning. Steven Brooks had subbed into the game in the top of the inning and took advantage in his first at-bat of the night. He singled to put runners at the corners for Tyler Rahmatulla. The UCLA freshman hit a slow roller to shortstop Derrick Dietrich who overthrew first base. Rahmatulla was credited with the RBI on the E6, scoring Belza. Two batters later another in-game substitution paid big dividends. Dean Green, pinch-hitting for Parker Bangs, rescued his fellow Oklahoma State Cowboy, Keeling, from the loss when he walloped a double into the right-center gap that scored Brooks and Rahmatulla to tie the game at four.
The Anglers loaded the bases in the bottom of the tenth with hits that all were on the ground. Nick Schwaner's single just rolled by second baseman Jake Lemmerman before Matt Duffy tapped an infield single down the first base line. Joey Terdoslavich laid down a textbook bunt that rolled down the third base line and allowed him to reach first, loading the bases for catcher Mike Murray. On a called strike three to Murray, the ball got away from catcher Cole Leonida for a passed ball and allowing pinch runner Brian Harris to scurry home as the game-winning run for the Anglers.
Chatham's Taylor Hill pitched a scoreless ninth and tenth to earn the win and improve to 1-0 with one save on the year. Hill and Vanderbilt teammate Russell Brewer now both have a win and a save in relief for the Anglers.

Belza finished the game 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. He has led the way with his bat hitting for an even .400 average with a homerun, 2 RBIs, and 4 runs scored... Temporary player Nick Schwaner is also showing off his skills at the plate. His 2-5 night puts him at .333 on the season as he leads all Anglers hitters with 18 official at-bats... With a different looking lineup and some in-game substitutions, right fielder Joey Terdoslavich is now the only Angler to play in all 45 innings to start the year. In addition to his bunt single in the tenth, the Long Beach State Dirtbag walked three times in the game.
