Chatham Anglers
The winning streak is at 6 games for the Chatham Anglers who took down the Gatemen at Wareham in a 10-inning affair.

Chatham got on the board first with back-to-back RBI singles by Brian Harris and Jeff Schaus to make it 2-0 in the top of the third inning. Harris brought in Steven Brooks, who finished the night 2-4 with a single, a double, and a couple of walks. Schaus and Harris also reached base four times in the game.

In the bottom half of the inning, Wareham's Shea Vucinich cut the lead in half hitting the first pitch he saw out of the park. That would not be the last time that the number nine hitter gave Chatham trouble.

Brooks and Harris scored again for the Anglers in the sixth inning off of a botched double play attempt that would have ended the inning. With two outs Parker Bangs hit a roller to shortstop. The toss to second base was followed by a Jake Lemmerman throw that sailed over first basemen Cole Leonida's head. The throwing error extended the Anglers lead to 4-1.

In a pitching matchup that featured two freshmen hurlers that had thrown a combined 24 scoreless innings leading up to Thursday night, Mike Dennhardt came out on top but had his potential victory wiped out in the later innings. He gave up 3 runs in 5.2 innings. Eric Pfisterer lasted just 4.2 innings surrendering 4 runs.

Wareham was not about to let Chatham cruise away with another easy victory. In the sixth, an RBI-single by George Springer brought in shortstop Derrick Dietrich to shorten the lead to 4-2. Then the next batter, Leonida, smacked a double to bring in the speedy Springer.

It was more Wareham in the seventh inning when Vucinich clocked his second longball of the game into the same spot in left field off of reliever Kevin Scanlan to tie the game at 4.

Both pitching staffs settled down and did not let up any more runs through nine innings. David Fischer was on the mound for a third consecutive inning of relief in the top of the tenth inning. Tom Belza set the table with a walk to lead off the inning. With two strikes against him, Phil Pohl laid down a bunt to advance Belza to second base. The throw by Fischer to first base spun away from Cole Leonida and the throwing error put Pohl safe on first with no outs. Whit Merrifield subbed in to run for Belza at second. In his first game with Chatham since 2007, Addison Johnson sacrificed the runners over to second and third base. That brought Steven Brooks to the plate with a chance to be a hero. Instead it was two wild pitches thrown by Bruce Kern that brought in Merrifield and then Pohl to put the Anglers ahead 6-4.

Thomas Keeling entered the game with a save opportunity and he was up for the challenge. He came out firing sidearm and blew away the first two hitters he faced with strikeouts. The 1-2-3 inning was completed on a flyout to rightfield that ended the game and gave Chatham their third win in extra innings.

Only 2 of the 6 runs scored by Chatham were RBIs thanks to the throwing error and a pair of wild pitches. On the other hand, the Anglers would not have even been in the game if it weren't for a number of defensive web gems by the infield. Tom Belza skied in the air to snag a ball hit well over his head and Matt Duffy robbed batters of hits all night long. In the eighth inning, Duffy made a jaw-dropping diving stop and throw to first for the 5-3 groundout on a hard hit ball by Shea Vucinich.

Russell Brewer picked up his second win of the season as the Anglers continue to be red hot and are now 9-1 through their first ten games.
