Offense Backs Up Thompson To Earn a Postseason Trip
With Brewster getting swept in a doubleheader and Falmouth falling to Y-D, it was win and you're in for the Anglers at Harwich Monday night. They did just that squeezing out a 6-5 dramatic triumph over the Mariners.
Harwich jumped ahead in the third with RBI-singles by Phil Gosselin and Leon Landry. Keenan Wiley and Gosselin scored to make it 2-0.
It wasn't until the fifth inning that Chatham was able to answer back but they did so in a big way. Matt Duffy (Tennessee) sparked the rally with a solo homerun blasted to left-centerfield. Matt Perry and Brian Harris followed with singles and a couple of batters later it was Dean Green who drove them home. Green's single gave the Anglers the 3-2 lead and added to his team-leading RBI total that now stands at 22.
Joey Terdoslavich (Long Beach State) kept the streak alive with an RBI-single to score Green and make it a four spot on the scoreboard for Chatham in the fifth.
4-2 became 5-2 in the seventh when Gosselin mishandled a groundball struck by Parker Bangs. The E4 scored Whit Merrifield and later proved to be a crucial run.
A Landry RBI-double cut the lead to 5-3. Then Dan Grovatt smacked a ball into left field and Landry was sent home. Leftfielder Tom Belza gunned down Landry at the plate with an accurate throw to Mike Murray who put on the tag for the out.
The Gosselin error combined with the Belza throw proved to be the difference especially with the fact that Harwich tacked on another run in the eighth. It was a Jeff Vigurs RBI-double that put the Mariners within a run.
Manager John Schiffner opted to go with closer Russell Brewer earlier than usual. He summoned the stopper in the eighth to record the final five outs for Chatham. Brewer did just that, first getting out of the eighth when there were runners on first and third with one out. Then Brewer shut the door on the Mariners season in the ninth by striking out Connor Powers with Landry at first base.
Brewer's tenth save of the season was the most important one of the season for Chatham. The 6-5 win officially cemented a playoff spot for the Anglers. They will play in the wildcard game on Friday, August 7th with the opponent and field yet to be determined.
Next is a two-game series against Orleans to round up the regular season. The final game of the season is at Veteran's Field but first the Anglers continue their travels with a 7PM game against the Firebirds. - Jake Thompson (Long Beach State) had his most impressive outing of the season pitching six innings and allowing just two runs. He fanned five batters and kept the Anglers within striking distance until they finally pounced in the fifth.
