Standout Performance by Stallings Overshadows Loss
by Scott Braun Tuesday, August 04, 2009
The Orleans Firebirds poured all of their runs on in one inning to take down the Chatham Anglers 5-1 Tuesday night. With the outcome of Tuesday's game, the playoff picture is officially set for the Anglers.
Orleans clinched the #3 seed with the win and will host the #6 seed Anglers on Friday night at Eldredge Park. It will be the third consecutive game between the two teams as the Anglers host the Firebirds in the final regular season game Wednesday night.
Highlights from Tuesday night included a Jacob Stallings blast to left field that gave the scoreboard a bruise. It was the first of three hits on the night for the North Carolina freshman who finished a triple short of the cycle.
On the other end one swing of the bat vaulted the Firebirds ahead of Chatham in the seventh. Kevin Muno shot a ball to left that just cleared the fence for a grand slam to make it 5-1 in favor of Orleans.
That score was a final as neither team could push any more runs across. Mike Dennhardt threw an impressive 6.1 innings allowing just one run.
The Anglers and Firebirds meet up in Chatham Wednesday night at 7PM for the final game of the regular season. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show will be on the air at 6:40PM from Veteran's Field.
