Anglers Top Mariners 3-1 in 11 Innings
The Chatham Anglers made it two in a row to start the 2010 season with a 3-1 victory in 11 innings Tuesday night over the Harwich Mariners at Whitehouse Field.

The Chatham bats looked as if they would carry over the momentum from Monday night's 13-hit outing as the Anglers were able to put a run on the board in the first inning thanks to a leadoff double by Brian Humphries and an RBI single by Marc Ginther to take a 1-0 lead. But the bats were held relatively silent through the next five innings, as Harwich starter Joe Holtmeyer (Nebraska - Omaha) held the Anglers lineup to just three hits and the one lone run through his six innings of work. The Division II All-American recorded 152 strikeouts through 87.1 innings as a starter for the Mavericks, and led all of NCAA baseball (as of May 18) with a 15.67 K-per-9 ratio.

Anglers starter Aaron Gates pitched well in his Cape League debut, tossing four scoreless innings despite allowing four walks, while giving up just one hit. Returning Angler Kevin Scanlan came on in relief to start the 5th and after striking out the first batter he faced, allowed the tying run to score after an RBI single from Stewart Ijames scored Andrew Ciencin. Scanlan would pitch through the end of the 7th, allowing just the one run on three hits, striking out three and walking one.

The two teams would send a combined five relievers to the mound through nine innings, allowing just five hits through the end of regulation. Mike Wright and Kevin Berry pitched a scoreless 10th for their respective team, with Berry shutting down the side in order all via the fly out.

With the top-third of Chatham's batting order due up in the 11th, the Mariners elected to keep Wright on the mound. The right hander promptly recorded his third strikeout, setting down Brian Humphries. Right fielder Peter Verdin then drew a walk, followed up by an RBI triple from Ginther to score the go-ahead run. Rick Oropesa followed with an RBI double to give the Anglers their third and final run. Kevin Vance, who started the evening as the team's DH, came on in relief to close out the contest, allowing three base runners, but recording the final out to bring the Anglers to a 2-0 record.

Wednesday's home opener against the Orleans Firebirds has been rescheduled to start at 4pm as opposed to the original 7pm start time due to a good chance of rain in the evening in Chatham.
