Anglers Suffer First Loss of 2010 Season, Fall to Whitecaps 7-0
by Anglers Media Team Friday, June 18, 2010
What started out as a pitching duel between Chatham's Kevin Berry (New Orleans) and Brewster's Matt Larkins (UC-Riverside) turned quickly in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Whitecaps were able to get to Berry, handing the Anglers their first defeat of the 2010 season with a 7-0 victory at Stony Brook Field.
Berry had been nearly perfect through the first four innings, only allowing a leadoff walk to Brewster center fielder Drew Martinez (Memphis) in the bottom of the fourth inning. He was only able to get one out in the bottom of the fifth while allowing two earned runs. After allowing a walk and a single to the first two batters he faced in the fifth, Berry hit first baseman Taylor Ard (Mt. Hood CC) with a pitch to load the bases. Catcher Jeremy Schaeffer (Tulane) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. Kevin Scanlan (Maine) came on in relief and allowed another run to score on a sacrifice fly to center before getting out of the inning.
Brewster starter Matt Larkins (UC-Riverside) limited the Anglers to one hit over five innings to pick up the win. Larkins allowed Anglers to reach base in four of the five innings he was on the mound, but Chatham was unable to advance a runner past second base. The Anglers best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth when third baseman Mark Ginther (Oklahoma State) walked with two outs and designated hitter Kevin Vance (Connecticut) followed with an infield single. That was all the Anglers could muster up as Larkins was able to get catcher Garrett Smith (Boston College) to ground out. Reliever Kyle Hendricks (Dartmouth) was equally as impressive and picked up the save by only giving up a bunt single in four innings of work.
Offensively, the Whitecaps were led by the top of the order. Second baseman Joe Berti (Bowling Green) and Martinez had two hits apiece and both scored two times. Berti gave Brewster some insurance in the sixth inning, scoring Martinez from second base with a single up the middle off of Kevin Scanlan (Maine) to increase the lead to 3-0. In the next inning, Berti lined a double to the gap in left-center scoring Martinez all the way from first.
The 3-1 Anglers will travel to Cotuit on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Kettleers at Lowell Park. The first game starts at 2 PM.
