Anglers Offense Struggles Again, Chatham Loses 2-1
The Anglers have now lost ten of their last 13 contests dating back to July 1st after falling to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox Thursday night at Veteran's Field by a score of 2-1. Chatham remains in fourth place in the Eastern Division with a 12-14-1 record. Right handed starter Logan Verrett (Baylor) was saddled with the loss after surrendering the first two runs of his 2010 season on five hits and a walk while striking out six through six innings of work. Through four starts the sophomore now carries a 1-1 record with a 0.69 ERA.

Both Verrett and Y-D starter Michael Goodnight (Houston) pitched well through the first five innings of the night, with neither allowing a run on a combined four hits. The Red Sox would strike first in the top of the sixth, after third baseman Tyler Hanover (LSU) led off the inning with a single. Shortstop Joe Panik (St. Johns) followed suit in the next at-bat with a single of his own before right fielder Stewart Ijames (Louisville) singled with one out to score Hanover to put Y-D up 1-0. First baseman Jordan Ribera (Fresno St.) stepped in for the next at-bat and fouled off a pitch down the left field line that was caught by Chatham left fielder Jason Martin (San Jose St.) on a spectacular sliding grab. Panik, tagging from third, was able to cross the white to tack on another run for the Sox and give them a 2-0 lead.

Goodnight would come on to start the eighth inning, and retired the first two batters he faced before plunking Chatham shortstop Stephen Perez (Miami) with a pitch to put him aboard. Center fielder Brian Humphries (Pepperdine), in the next at-bat, lifted a line drive to right that was misplayed by Bobby Crocker (Cal Poly), who had come in to the contest as a defensive replacement to start the inning, allowing Perez with his speed just enough time to score and cut the Y-D lead to one.

Chatham reliever Zack Jones (San Jose St.) closed out his three innings of relief, leaving the Anglers with the bottom half of the ninth to attempt a comeback. Y-D reliever Anthony Desclafani (Florida), who came on in the eighth to face one batter and close out the inning, came on to start the ninth. After retiring the first two batters he faced via a fly out and a strikeout, Chatham first baseman Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) reached on a throwing error by Hanover, and was lifted for pinch runner Peter Verdin (Georgia). With pinch hitter Joe Pavone (UConn) batting for catcher Jacob Stallings, Verdin attempted to steal second, and was thrown out by Y-D catcher Beau Taylor (Central Fla.) to end the contest.

The Anglers take back to the road Friday night to take on the Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park with a scheduled 7pm start.
