Anglers Defeat Firebirds 3-0 to Record First Shutout of Season
One game after being eliminated from playoff contention, the Anglers posted their first shutout of the 2010 season Tuesday, blanking the Orleans Firebirds 3-0. Logan Verrett (Baylor) tossed just 76 pitches before yielding to the bullpen after the seventh inning, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters. The right hander picked up his second win of the season in his sixth start.
Chatham took an early lead in the top of the second inning after catcher Joe Pavone (UConn) led off the inning with a single. The hit was the first allowed by reliever Matt Sisto (Hawaii), who was brought on after starter Kyle Simon (Arizona) faced just three batters. Orleans would send six men to the mound by games end. With Pavone on first, first baseman Rick Oropesa (USC) belted a double to right-center field, scoring Pavone to give the Anglers the 1-0 lead. Designated hitter Kevin Vance (UConn) would single in the next at-bat and with Riley Reynolds (Vanderbilt) at the plate would move to second on a throwing error by Sisto that scored Oropesa and put Chatham up by two.
The Anglers would tack on one more run in the eighth after Jason Martin (San Jose St.) singled with one out. He would advance to second two batters later when Aaron Westlake (Vanderbilt) reached on an error by shortstop Shon Roe (Loyola-Marymount). Pavone would single in the next at-bat to bring Martin around and give Chatham the 3-0 lead, and eventual victory. Vance would be brought on to pitch the ninth, and needed just twelve pitches to retire the side in order.
The Anglers return to Veterans Field Wednesday for the final game of the season, with first pitch scheduled for 7pm against the Firebirds for the second consecutive night.
