Baseball America has posted its Preseason All-America Teams as voted by Major League Baseball scouting directors. Two Chatham Anglers were named, including junior designated hitter
Richie Shaffer (Clemson) and sophomore third baseman
Kris Bryant (San Diego). The entire three-team list is available at
BaseballAmerica.com.
Shaffer, who played first base and third base for Chatham in 2011, was named BA's first-team designated hitter. With the Tigers last season, the Charlotte, NC native hit .315 with 13 HR and 55 RBIs. He was a first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and an All-ACC Academic team member. Considered one of the best defensive first basement in Clemson history, he's committed only three errors in 111 career games (a .996 fielding percentage). A Tigers co-captain for 2012, Shaffer is rated as the nation's #13 college prospect for the 2012 draft by BA. The 6-3, 205-lb. right-handed hitter had 36 hits in 137 at bats for Chatham while leading the club in home runs (6) and collecting the second most RBIs (22).
Bryant also played first and third base for Chatham in 2011, and is expected to reprise that role in the summer of 2012. BA recognized the Las Vegas, NV native as a third-team third baseman. As a freshman for the Torreros, Bryant was the West Coast Conference's Co-Player and Co-Freshman of the Year and a first-team Freshman All-American. His .365 batting average was tops in the WCC and his nine home runs were tied for the conference lead. He drove in 36 runs, scored 57 runs and produced a .599 slugging percentage with a .482 on-base percentage. The 6-5, 215-lb. right-handed hitter started each of USD's 53 games, including all 21 conference matchups during which he put together a 15-game hitting streak. With the Anglers, Bryant hit .233 (29-for-130) with 16 RBIs, six doubles, two triples and three homers.
