On Friday, three members of the Chatham Anglers were selected for the 2012 Cape League All-Star game. Right-hander Ryan Thompson (Franklin Pierce), right-hander Michael Wagner (San Diego) and catcher Andrew Knapp (California) will represent the Anglers on July 28 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich.
Thompson (1-0, 1.66 ERA) has recorded 24 strikeouts and has issued only seven walks in four starts this season. The Alberta native has allowed one home run in 2012 and hitters are batting .230 against him.
Wagner (2-1, 1.69 ERA) has limited hitters to a .203 batting average against him over the summer. The six-foot four right-hander has fanned 25 batters and has issued 12 walks in five appearances.
In addition to being behind the plate, Knapp has been heavily used as a first baseman and designated hitter by manager John Schiffner. The only active player on the Anglers' roster to have more than 20 hits this season, Knapp is batting .281 with four home runs and 13 RBI. Knapp currently leads Chatham with four home runs and is second in RBI. Defensively, the sophomore has also thrived on the Cape and has thrown out eight attempted base stealers in 24 attempts, good for a league leading .333 (Knapp is tied with fellow Chatham catcher Chad Morgan for this mark).
