Anglers Eye Division Title, Start Final Stretch against Wareham
The story of Chatham's league-leading summer grew richer Saturday in South Yarmouth.

Before 4217 fans--and roughly 100 scouts--the East defeated the West, 9-3, in the annual Cape League All-Star Game. Four Anglers contributed to the winning effort, but the player voted most valuable from the East Division was Chatham's J.D. Davis (Cal State Fullerton).

A mid-game replacement at first-base, Davis blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to extend the East lead to 8-2. He added a double and run scored in the eighth. In his last 10 games for Chatham, Davis is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with 13 RBIs.

Matt Gage (Siena) tossed a 1-2-3 sixth frame. Connor Joe (San Diego) and Dante Flores (Southern Cal) started at catcher and second base, respectively, with Joe reaching twice on walks. Flores leads the A's with a .339 average while Joe bats at .328 with a club-best 20 RBIs.

Leading the East Division by 12 points, Chatham (24-10-1) turns its sights to the last nine games of the regular season. The Wareham Gatemen (7-27-1) visit Veterans Field Sunday having lost each of three previous matchups with the A's.

Manager John Schiffner sends right-hander Andrew Chin (Boston College) to the mound looking to build on his 2-0 record. Despite allowing seven earned runs in his last 2.1 innings, Schiffner points to Chin's dedication.

He has been working a lot, Schiffner said. He and (pitching coach) Matt Gardner have been working on improving some stuff, so he should be good for his next start.

The starting pitcher in two of Wareham's seven wins, righty Kurt McCune (LSU) takes the hill Sunday. The former second-team freshmen all-America selection is 1-1 this summer following a 1-2 effort in four starts with the Gatemen last year.

Outfielder Kyle Schwarber (Indiana), a key member of Wareham's 2012 championship club, returned to the Cape Thursday after a stint with Team USA. In his 2013 season debut at Y-D, he was 4-for-4 with a ninth-inning, game-tying homer. Last summer the Ohioan batted .343 with 38 RBIs in 44 games.

First pitch Sunday at Veterans Field is 7 p.m. Tune into the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. for live coverage with broadcasters Brandon Liebhaber and Keith Zubrow at TRZ Teamline or call 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
