With one game left in the regular season, the Chatham Anglers (26-16-1) find themselves struggling.
They have lost four-straight games, and during an eight-game stretch since their last off day, the Anglers have only won two games. Chatham will travel to Eldredge Park for the final time this regular season, looking to muster a little momentum before the playoffs.
The Anglers offense could not put a run on the board Saturday night in the 1-0 loss to the Firebirds. Chatham had seven hits, but left nine men on base.
Looking to help Chatham get back on track will be Jimmy Litchfield (UC Irvine). It will be a staff day for the Anglers, in an attempt by Manager John Schiffner and the coaching staff to align the starters for the first round of the playoffs.
The Anglers will have to face Orleans right-hander Conor Harber (Western Nevada CC), who has not allowed a run, and has struck out two in three innings pitched for the Firebirds.
With a win, or losses by Hyannis and Falmouth, the Anglers will clinch the Presidents Cup, the award given to the team with the best record in the Cape League.
After tonights game, Schiffner and the Anglers will turn their attention to the playoffs, where they will take on the Y-D Red Sox in the first round. The Red Sox sit in fourth-place of the East Division, and currently hold a 19-22 record.
Chatham is 4-1-1 against the Red Sox this season, including 3-0 against them at Veterans Field.
First pitch for game one will be on Tuesday at 7 p.m at Veterans Field.
Before that, though, the Anglers will look to snap their losing streak before the end of the regular season against Orleans.
