There are nine other teams in the Cape Cod Baseball League, and the Chatham Anglers have played eight of them. Tonight, the Anglers (9-8) will travel the final team, the Wareham Gatemen (9-8), for the first time this season. The interdivision showdown will take place 7 p.m. at Spillane Field.
In a matchup of the league’s easternmost team against its westernmost team, Chatham is expected to send the left-handed Jesse Adams (Boston College) to the hill for the second time this year.
Adams’ first appearance of the season came against a team residing nearly as far west as Wareham, the Cotuit Kettleers (5-12). Adams sliced up the Kettleers in that contest, giving up four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. The effort led to a 4-1 Chatham victory, and it was a pivotal piece of a run in which Chatham won five out of six games.
“I was pleased with my performance, and I knew the bullpen was going to come in and perform after I left,” said Adams. “Next time out I’m going to focus on a little more command of my off-speed pitches.”
The individual who caught Adams in that game was his collegiate teammate, Nick Sciortino (Boston College). Sciortino has been a defensive force behind the plate for Chatham, catching 66.67% of runners who have attempted to steal against him. Pitchers appreciate Sciortino’s arm, as well as his ability to save wild pitches.
“Having a catcher who can block like that is a big luxury,” said Chatham pitcher, T.J. Zeuch (Pittsburgh). “It definitely gives you more confidence to throw breaking balls in the dirt with runners on.”
First pitch is 7 p.m. from Spillane Field. Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott have call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. It can be viewed/heard on TRZ Teamline or heard toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
