Sciortino gives Anglers life ahead of Orleans Showdown

Chatham broadcaster Jonny Wincott (Syracuse) coined a classic call when catcher Nick Sciortino (Boston College) threw out his 11th runner of the summer Monday night.

“America runs on Dunkin', but nobody runs on Nick Sciortino.”

The call was concise. It was humorous. And most importantly, it was accurate.

Sciortino has been a wall with a rocket launcher for the Anglers behind the plate. He has thrown out more runners than anybody on the Cape (13), and he is on a four-game streak of catching a would-be base stealer.

“He’s as good of a catch-and-throw catcher as we’ve had here,” said 23rd-year Chatham manager, John Schiffner. “He blocks well, he’s obviously thrown out a bunch of guys, and he’s had an exceptional year.”

Sciortino’s parents, Bonnie and Steven, arrived from New Jersey to see some of their son’s exceptional play first-hand yesterday.

“It’s funny because we saw Summer Catch a few years ago and there was that character who played for Boston College, so of course we thought of Nick,” said Bonnie. “But we never dreamed that one day Nick would actually be playing for Chatham.”

Last night—in front of his parents—Nick was playing for Chatham. He threw out two base runners and hit a three-run, bases-clearing double.

“It’s a great feeling to do that with them in the stands,” said Sciortino. “I know they were cheering for me, and it just feels great.”

Tonight, Zac Gallen (North Carolina), a pitcher who played seven years of travel baseball with Sciortino growing up, is expected to start for Chatham (10-10) against Orleans (14-5). Gallen has yet to allow an earned run in nine innings and sports a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 15:4.

The probable Firebird starter, Kyle Serrano (Tennessee), is 3-0 with a 2.40 ERA.

First pitch is 7 p.m. at Veterans Field. Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott have the call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:40 p.m. on TRZ Teamline and at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
