The Streak: Chatham aims to extend 3-game streak 5 pm at Brewster

The Chatham Anglers (14-11) have won three in a row, and that means it’s time for an edition of “The Streak.” Here are three numbers you need to know about the Chatham win streak heading into tonight’s 5 p.m. contest in Brewster.

29 Runs Scored

In the last three games, the Chatham Anglers have put up 29 runs. That is good for an average of 9.67 runs per game, nearly triple this year’s league average of 3.66 runs per contest. The players credit the offensive breakthrough on the coaching they have received and the better mechanics they have developed over the past month on the Cape.

“I know when I got here I had a lot of extra movement in my swing,” said Zack Short (Sacred Heart). “The coaches have really been working with us a lot on being more direct to the ball. Especially up here where guys are throwing in the 90s all the time, you’re going to be a lot more successful if you can be direct.”

Short’s renewed approach at the dish has shown in the last three games. He has recorded a hit in all three contests to go with three RBIs over the same period.

8 Luke Persico RBIs

Luke Persico (UCLA) has eight RBIs during the streak. The outfielder started his RBI parade back on Sunday night when he launched the first Chatham grand slam of the summer into the trees beyond the Veterans Field scoreboard, and he hasn’t looked back since. He is 4-9 with two walks and has also recorded four runs over the span. He now leads all Chatham batters and is tied for third on the Cape with three home runs on the summer.

“He walked the batter before me so I figured he had to get ahead with a fastball,” said Persico after his grand slam Monday night. “I was sitting dead red, and I got it.”

4 Trenton Brooks Hits

After recording four hits on Wednesday night, Trenton Brooks (Nevada) is now one of two players in the Cape League to record four hits in one game this season (the other being Nick Solak of Bourne). Brooks, who also recorded three RBIs in Wednesday’s game, leads all eligible Chatham batters with a .301 summer batting average. He and Persico are now tied for second in team RBIs (11) behind Short (13).

“I see good adjustments from a lot of our guys up there,” said Manager John Schiffner. “It’s great to see them buying in and putting together good at-bats.”

Tonight, Chatham will try to extend the streak at Stony Brook Field against the Brewster Whitecaps (13-12). A.J Puckett (Pepperdine) is expected to get the ball for the Anglers. The right-hander has a 3.52 ERA and has struck out twice the number of batters he has walked on the Cape this summer. Brewster will likely counter with Jordan Sheffield (Vanderbilt). Another righty, Sheffield is 1-0 with a 2.57 through seven innings on the Cape.

Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott will have the call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 4:40 p.m. on TRZ Teamline and at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841
