Anglers to start road stint against Harwich

After playing four of their last five at home, the Chatham Anglers (15-12) will hit the road for a two-game stint. The Anglers begin the road trip with a 5:30 p.m. contest against the Harwich Mariners (12-14) tonight. Following a Monday off day, they travel to Stony Brook Field to meet the Whitecaps (13-14) on Tuesday.

Garrett Williams (Oklahoma State) is expceted to get the ball in tonight's showdown. The left-hander made four starts in 10 total appearances for the Anglers in 2014, and he has made four bullpen appearances this season. Tonight’s expected start would be the first for him as a second-year Angler.

“His stuff is really, really good,” said Manager John Schiffner. “He throws hard with great movement, and he has a great, great breaking pitch.”

Williams’ defining appearance of the season thus far was his July 4th showing against the Orleans Firebirds (19-8) at Eldredge Park. Against the team that has outscored every other Cape League club by at least 10 runs, the second-year Angler threw three innings of no-hit ball in relief. He struck out five of the ten batters he faced while issuing a single walk.

“I think being comfortable really helped be in that appearance,” said Williams. “I was just trusting in my stuff and doing my thing.”

Tonight, the opposing pitcher expected to meet Williams is Joe O’Donnell (North Carolina State). The right-hander has made five summer starts for the Mariners. His efforts have yielded an 0-1 record with a 3.72 ERA, but he has only given up more than two runs in one appearance. He has 15 strikeouts in 19 innings against five walks over the same period.

Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott will have the call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 5:10 p.m. on TRZ Teamline and at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
