After pulling off a dramatic victory against the Wareham Gatemen (12-17) at Veterans Field Wednesday, the Chatham Anglers (17-13) rematch that same Gatemen 7 p.m. tonight at Spillane Field. As the two foes set for their final regular-season meeting of the summer, here is a look back at Wednesday’s game and ahead to tonight’s contest.

Hey batter batter

The Anglers used 11 hits, four bases on balls, two errors, and one hit-by-pith to produce 18 baserunners in Wednesday's contest. The pivotal blows in the victory were a pair of RBI singles from Aaron Barnett (Pepperdine) and Todd Czinege (Villanova). Barnett’s RBI came on a swing that extended his hit streak to four consecutive games in the bottom of the fourth, and Czinege drove in the go-ahead and ultimately winning run with an opposite-field rope in the bottom of the seventh.

“I’ve been working on my approach at the plate,” said Czinege after converting in the crucial situation. “Just trying to see pitches for a long time and stay to the right side. This time I came through and got something done in the situation when it was needed.”

Kings of the hill

Jake Godfrey (Louisiana State) made his second start of the summer and put together four strong innings. The hard-throwing righty’s fastball was healthily into the 90s all night, and he used it to set up four strikeouts. After snatching one unearned run in the top of the first inning, Wareham was powerless against him.

Godfrey was followed by a combination of three Angler relief pitchers who, in the words of Manager John Schiffner, put together “a typical day from the Chatham bullpen.”

Brandon Miller (Millersville) and was nearly perfect in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. The only baserunner he allowed reached by a grazing hit-by-pitch, and he earned his third win of the year for the effort. Cameron Stone (Stony Brook) succeeded him by hanging a zero in the eighth inning, and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) slammed shut his sixth save of the year in the ninth to ice the 2-1 victory.

"The pitchers did it again," said Schiffner. "It was another great day for them."

Time to do it again

The Anglers are expected to hand the ball to Dan Castano (Baylor) when they attempt to record a four-game season sweep against the Gatemen tonight. The big left-hander is coming off possibly his strongest outing of the summer thus far—a four-inning relief appearance against Brewster on July 10. Castano did not allow a single hit and recorded the win in that outing.

He will likely be met by Shaun Anderson (Florida). The right-handed Anderson has yet to receive a decision either way this summer, but he has also yet to allow a run in seven innings pitched. Tonight’s start would be his first since July 4 when he struck out six over five innings of shutout ball in a 0-0 tie against Bourne.
