The Streak: Chatham bullpen puts 12-inning scoreless streak on line at Bourne

BOURNE, Mass. – The Chatham Anglers’ (18-14) bullpen finds themselves in the midst of a hot streak heading into tonight’s 6 p.m. matchup with the Bourne Braves (14-16). The relief unit that sports two 2015 Cape Cod Baseball League All Stars—Brandon Miller (Millersville) and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) — has not allowed a run in 12 consecutive innings. Here are three numbers you need to know about the Chatham pen’s scoreless streak entering tonight’s play.

7 different pitchers

The Anglers have used seven different pitchers out of the bullpen to complete the 12- inning scoreless streak. Zack Burdi (Louisville) and Brandon Miller (Millersville) lead the way with three scoreless frames apiece. C.J Burdick (San Diego) owns two scoreless innings, and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech), Cameron Stone (Stony Brook), James Mulry (North Eastern), and Andre Scrubb (High Point) each claim one. Depending on how they structure the rotation over the next week, the Anglers still have at least three more pitchers who can be used in a relief capacity and have not yet thrown during the streak.

2 hits allowed

The Chatham bullpen has given up 2 hits over the course of their streak. That averages to 1.5 hits per nine innings of baseball. As a measure of comparison, the 2015 league average is 7.95 hits per nine innings. Every pitcher who has thrown during the streak has completed at least one inning without allowing a base knock. Brandon Miller leads the way in this department with three no-hit innings of relief, and Zack Burdi closely follows him with two no-hit frames. Both Miller and Burdi delivered their performances in one-run games—Miller July 15 against Wareham and Burdi July 18 against Orleans.

10 strikeouts

The Angler relievers have recorded 10 strikeouts during the 12-inning scoreless streak. Zack Burdi accounts for four of them, and Brandon Miller owns three. The bullpen has walked three batters over the same time frame. That yields 3.33 strikeouts per walk issued, relative to the league average of 2.40 strikeouts per walk. The pen is also good for an average of 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings and 2.25 walks per nine.

Heading into tonight’s contest the starter the Chatham bullpen is expected to support Garrett Williams (Oklahoma State). The left-handed Williams was masterful in his only previous start this summer, striking out six in five scoreless innings against Harwich on July 12. He will likely meet Bourne’s Keegan Akin (Western Michigan). Also a left-hander, Akin is 1-3 with a 3.47 ERA.
