Angler bullpen looks to keep rolling against Red Sox
CHATHAM, Mass. – Before games they are usually throwing around a Frisbee while they warm up. In the early innings, they are probably playing Password or some other variation of word game to entertain themselves. And in the mid to late innings, they come in and shut their opponents down.
The Chatham Anglers’ (22-18) bullpen has operated in this fashion all year, and they did it again in the midst of an air-tight East Division playoff race Wednesday night at Falmouth.
“We do like to joke around in the bullpen a little bit,” said Chatham pitcher Brandon Miller (Millersville). “But when it’s time to focus, everybody out there focuses in only on the game—not just on their own performance, but when one of our teammates is on the mound too.”
Following a solid 4.2 inning start from Ty Damron (Texas Tech), an Angler trio comprised of Brandon Miller (Millersville), Andre Scrubb (High Point), and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) combined to close out the final 4.1 innings without surrendering a run. Chatham’s 3-2 victory at the game’s conclusion marked the 21st time in 40 games that the Angler pitching staff has held their opponents to two runs or fewer this season.
“The pitching staff did a great job again,” said Manager John Schiffner. “They change speeds well and locate well.”
Tonight the Chatham pitching staff will look to continue its success in another significant game—a 7 p.m. home contest against the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (20-20). The Anglers currently sit at third place, four points ahead of the Red Sox in the standings. The six-point Chatham lead over Harwich (18-20-2) with four games left to play and Harwich's ownership of the head-to-head tiebreaker makes the Anglers’ magic number to clinch a playoff birth two.
The starter who the Anglers will likely turn to tonight is Daniel Castano (Baylor). The big lefty with a 22:8 strikeout to walk tally had a streak of nine consecutive scoreless innings earlier this month. The Red Sox will likely counter with Brandon Bailey (Gonzaga), who is 1-1 against Chatham on the year. Bailey is 2-4 with a 3.24 ERA cumulatively this summer.
