Playoff scenarios as Anglers look to clinch against Mariners tonight

CHATHAM, Mass. – Three games remain in the 2015 Cape Cod Baseball League regular season, and there are still very few mathematical impossibilities in the East Division. Though the official playoffs do not begin until August 3, the closely-contended nature of this year’s race has already brought a post-season atmosphere.

“You have to battle to the end of every game,” said Manager John Schiffner. “This is Cape League playoff baseball now.”

The top four teams in each division make the postseason, and they match up in a standard #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3 fashion within their own division. Each series is best two-out-of-three, and the two division winners square off for another two-out-of-three series for the 2015 Cape League championship.

With the post-season feel already present, here are the current playoff scenarios for the Chatham Anglers and their eastern counterparts as they enter today’s play.

Chatham Anglers (22-19), 3rd East: The Anglers find themselves in the driver’s seat position of “win and your in” when they play the Mariners 6:30 p.m. at Whitehouse Field. Though Harwich holds the head-to-head against Chatham, the Anglers’ current four-point lead with three to play would become insurmountable in the event of a Chatham triumph. The Anglers can still finish anywhere between second and fifth depending on the outcome of this final weekend.

Orleans Firebirds (28-12-1), 1st East: One of two teams to have already clinched playoff births in the East, the Firebirds have also already locked up the Presidents Trophy as the best East Division team in the regular season. They have the division’s top seed clinched and the luxury of being able to position pitchers and rest players for the postseason.

Brewster Whitecaps (23-17-1), 2nd East: The other East Division team to have already clinched a playoff spot, the Whitecaps now turn their focus to securing guaranteed first-round home-field advantage enjoyed by the second seed. Brewster’s three-point lead over Chatham with as many games to play puts their magic number for the second seed at two. The Anglers and Red Sox can still both mathematically capture that spot.

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (21-20), 4th East: Like the Anglers, the Red Sox too can finish anywhere between second and last with three games to play. Winning out will garuntee them at least the fourth seed and a playoff birth. A Y-D win tonight combined with a Harwich loss would garuntee the Red Sox a playoff spot and eliminate the Mariners.

Harwich Mariners (18-21-2), 5th East: The only team in the East currently owning a record below .500, the Mariners are trying to put together a late run. Harwich can theoretically still finish as high as third, but that would require them to win out, Chatham to lose out, and Yarmouth-Dennis to lose two out of their last three. The Mariners need to win two more games than the Red Sox over the final three with at least one win coming against Brewster (which would give Harwich the third tie-breaker after splitting the first two with Y-D) to edge into the final playoff spot.

Chatham Tonight

The Anglers will likely call on Jake Godfrey (Louisiana State) in their win-and-in matchup against the Harwich Mariners 6:30 p.m. at Whitehouse Field. Though his record still appears at a statistically anomalous 0-0, Godfrey has recorded an ERA of 1.25 over his first six Cape League appearances. He will likely be met by Cameron Vieaux (Michigan State). Vieaux is 1-4 with a 3.17 ERA on the summer.

Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott will have the call live, starting with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show at 6:10 p.m. on TRZ Teamline and at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
