Veterans Field

It has been a playground to many and a cathedral to more.

At first sight, it appears to be nothing more than a simple baseball field—just a few basic geometric configurations of chalk on top of dirt and grass. Its blue outermost fence runs in the standard shape of an arc between two towering, mustard-colored polls. Nothing about the field would specifically alert a newcomer to the momentous nature of the events that transpire below its new 80-foot, metallic light polls. Even the same scoreboard that was used in the filming of “Summer Catch” standing just beyond left field would not resonate with an individual who has never heard of the Chatham Anglers.

It would not be until people fill this hallowed ground when one would begin to understand its significance. As the best college baseball players in the country loosen their arms and take batting practice, it would begin to become apparent that this humble field is the summer stomping ground for a group of elite athletes. As Manager John Schiffner walks onto to field for his 23rd season at the helm of the Anglers, it would become apparent that there is some type of magnetism within the diamond that holds those who come into it dearly. As bleachers begin to fill and the names of Munson, Longoria, Harvey, Lowell, Bagwell, Bay, Miller, and so many others who have defended this home ground since its construction in 1923 echoed through the air, one would begin to understand its history. And as one begins to overhear the conversations of families who have hosted players and fans who have come to games for decades, one would begin to understand its significance.

Its name is Veterans Field. And it is the home of the Chatham Anglers.
