The Chatham Anglers (4-2) will visit the Harwich Mariners (3-3) and Whitehouse Field at 6:30 p.m. tonight. All indications seem to lend themselves to a potential pitching duel. Harwich and Chatham are third and fourth in team ERA, surrendering only 2.25 and 2.47 runs per nine innings respectively. The two staffs are also first and second in walks allowed, with Chatham surrendering only 11 bases on balls and Harwich issuing only 12 free passes.
“Everybody here has real good pitching,” said Manager John Schiffner. “Starters, relievers, everybody is pretty good in the Cape League.”
The expected pitcher for the Anglers is the right-handed Zac Gallen (North Carolina). He has not taken the mound on the Cape this season, but he pitched 29 innings for Chatham last year. He threw 16 strike outs to 11 walks and finished the season with a 4.34 ERA despite only being a rising sophomore. With another year of college experience under his belt, Gallen is excited to put on the Angler uniform again this summer.
“It’s great to be back here,” said Gallen. “I had a great time last year with the guys in Chatham, and I’m looking forward to being here again.”
Harwich’s probable pitcher is a left-hander who also has some Cape Cod Baseball League experience, Scott Tully (Notre Dame). Tully threw four innings for the Mariners last season, striking out four batters and allowing no runs. In his first start this year, he struck out six batters in six innings of one-run baseball against the Cotuit Kettleers (3-4).
The contest comes after a week of scheduled games for both teams, followed by a mutual break from official action on Monday.
“We love to be out here playing every night,” said catcher Nick Sciortino (Boston College). “But a little time to breathe once in a while and enjoy Cape Cod away from baseball is awesome too.”
The live radio broadcast will begin at 6:10 p.m. with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show. As always it is possible to listen on TRZ Teamline or call in toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
