One week ago the Chatham Anglers (4-4) sat at the precipice of an opportunity for redemption. After losing the first half of a home-and-home to the Brewster Whitecaps (3-5) on June 11th, the Anglers were set to rematch the same Whitecap team the next day. And then the Veteran’s Field fog came rolling in, and the game was called off in the third inning.
The Anglers won the two games immediately following the fogout, but they now find themselves in a position much like the one they were in going into the first scheduled date against Brewster—looking for redemption. After coming up short to Falmouth in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday and dropping two consecutive contests to the Harwich Mariners on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Anglers have lost their last three.
“We’re flat right now,” said Manager John Schiffner. “Right now we’re in a funk.”
There have been clear bright spots over the time period, such as Gabe Friese (Kennesaw State) retiring all 13 batters he faced in a relief appearance against Harwich. But the timely hitting that characterized the Angler offense in the first five games has been unable to generate adequate run support for their pitching staff in the last three games.
“We need to take better at-bats,” said Trenton Brooks (Nevada). “We need to get pitches we can drive, and maybe get sped-up a little more rather than just waiting for the ball to come to us.”
Even with the recent offensive struggles, Trenton Brooks and Zack Short (Sacred Heart) are each clear of the .300 mark, and four other Anglers are hitting .259 or better on the year. These numbers indicate the offense may be dormant, but it is still capable of exploding.
T.J. Zeuch (Pitt), who threw five and two thirds without giving up and earned run against Yarmouth-Dennis, is the probable Chatham pitcher. Jacob Jenkins (Pacific) is expected to make his first start for Brewster.
First pitch is 7 p.m. at Veterans Field in Chatham. The live broadcast begins at 6:40 p.m. with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show and can be viewed/heard on TRZ Teamline or heard toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
