Chatham aces acing midterm week

This week could be classified as a baseball edition of fist-semester midterm week for the student-athletes of the Chatham Anglers (9-5). It is a quarter of the way through the season, and they have a grueling series of tests before them. So far, the Chatham aces have helped their team ace the exams.

The first two tests of the week came on a field trip to the West Division leaders, the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (9-6). After studying meteorology on Sunday, the teams played a doubleheader Monday. Pitching was at the head of the class in both Chatham victories. Parker Dunshee (Wake Forest) was responsible for two runs over six innings in the first game, and Ty Damron (Texas Tech) surrendered one run over five innings in the second. Andre Scrubb (High Point) closed out the game one, and C.J. Burdick (San Diego) and Aaron McGarity (Virginia Tech) combined to finish game two.

“We played the team with the best record in the league [at that point] and swept them,” said Manager John Schiffner. “That tells you something about our team.”

Chatham’s next test came on Thursday against the team that replaced Hyannis as the squad with the best record in the league, the Orleans Firebirds (10-4).

Again, pitching rose to the forefront, and again the Anglers passed. T.J. Zeuch (Pittsburgh) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and finished with six scoreless. Jim McDade (Millersville), Brandon Miller (Millersville), and Andre Scrubb (High Point) combined for the last four frames of a ten-inning game to help the Anglers by the Firebirds, 2-1.

The base runner who scored the winning run in the tenth was a pinch runner who pitched earlier in the week, Parker Dunshee.

Tonight, the Anglers will retest against the same Hyannis Harbor Hawks team they swept on Monday. Zac Gallen (North Carolina), who has yet to surrender an earned run, will try to help the Anglers ace this round. Blake Quinn (Fullerton), who is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA, is expected to go against him.

Dominic Cotroneo and Jonny Wincott will start the live broadcast at 6:40 with the Anglers Extra Pregame Show. Watch and/or listen at TRZ Teamline, or listen toll-free at 1-800-846-4700, code 3841.
