Chatham, Mass. — Following their 5-3 loss to the Orleans Firebirds on Friday night, the Chatham Anglers return to Veterans Field to play host to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at 7 p.m.
The Anglers (11-17-1) are reeling after losing six of their last seven, as they now find themselves in last place in the East Division. Chatham’s last win came back on July 6 against the Wareham Gatemen when the Anglers won on a walk-off home run by Tanner Gardner.
It has been a tale of two seasons for Yarmouth-Dennis (18-11-0). The Red Sox began the summer in the cellar of the East, dropping their first five games before Scott Pickler and the rest of the coaching staff organized a baseball exorcism, burning a bat, a glove, and a ball to signify the end of their misfortunes. The tactic has worked as Y-D has won 18 of its last 24 games and now is in a tie with Harwich for first place.
At the Plate: Since making his CCBL debut on July 6, Tanner Gardner has been the most consistent hitter for Chatham, crafting a .318 batting average in seven games. Entering tonight’s game, the Texas Tech product has a hit in all but one contest this summer.
In the last seven days, DJ Artis has reached base four times in 10 at-bats while striking out once. The Liberty outfielder was the only Angler to record multiple hits in Friday’s loss as he stroked an RBI double in the seventh inning.
Matt Winaker has been the spearhead for Y-D in his last four games, compiling a .563 average in four straight Red Sox wins. Leading the way with nine hits in 16 at-bats, Winaker has driven in four runs on seven singles, a double, and a triple.
On the season, the Stanford product is hitting .325 has reached base in every game since July 8. Winaker’s best game this summer came on July 13 against Orleans, where he went 4-for-5 and scored a run.
On the Rubber: Caleb Gilbert (0-1) shoots for his first win of the season tonight, taking the mound for the first time against Y-D. In his only other start for Chatham, Gilbert took the loss after allowing two earned runs over four innings against Falmouth on July 9. Gilbert has appeared in three games this summer, earning a 4.15 ERA in eight and two-thirds innings. The LSU right-hander has struck out six while walking four.
Down the Road: Chatham takes on the Hyannis Harbor Hawks tomorrow night at McKeon Park at 6 p.m. Following a day off on Monday, the Anglers will host Brewster at 7 p.m. at Veterans Field.
Make sure to tune in at 6:40 p.m. today for the Anglers Extra Pregame Show on the Cape Cod Baseball Network. Evan Stockton will introduce you to his Catch of the Day while Jake Eisenberg sits down with manager John Schiffner.
