Game 1 Preview: Chatham @ Falmouth, June 14, 2017

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers will open their season against the Falmouth Commodores today at Guv Fuller Field, Falmouth.

Right-handed pitcher Justin Lasko (University of Massachusetts - Amherst) is expected to take the mound in the contest. Lasko had a successful sophomore season with the Minutemen, throwing 62 strikeouts with a finishing ERA of 3.69 over 83.0 innings.

“He’s a fastball slider kind of guy and gets a lot of ground balls,” said field manager John Schiffner. “If you can get ground balls, then we can play catch and we’ll help him out.”

Offensively, the team has made significant progress since arriving on the Cape last week, Schiffner said.

“We’ve made some adjustments,” Schiffner said. “We’re trying to keep the ball out of the air, we’re trying to hit line drives and ground balls.”

The Anglers are missing a host of players due to the coincidence of the NCAA Tournament with the beginning of the Cape League season. Caleb Gilbert (LSU, So. RHP), Josh Stowers (Louisville So. OF), Adam Wolf (Louisville, So. LHP) will compete in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska this weekend.

Historically, the Anglers have had a split record against Falmouth. In 2016, the team notched a .500 mark against the Commodores, winning two games out of four. Chatham finished the 2015 season with a 3-1 slate, sweeping Falmouth on the road.

Looking forward, the Anglers enter the new season in high spirits. “We’re ready,” Schiffner said. “We have 44 games to prove ourselves.”

First pitch at Falmouth is scheduled for 6 p.m. Listen to the live broadcast here: http://www.teamline.cc/sportpage'teamcode=3841&eventcode=5
