A's and Gatemen play two Sunday

Chatham, Mass. — Following two consecutive postponed games, the Anglers (1-1) will host the Wareham Gatemen (2-1) in a doubleheader at Veterans Field beginning at 5 p.m.

The Anglers’ home opener against Cotuit (2-0) was postponed Wednesday after half an inning due to heavy rain. Unplayable field conditions forced the postponement of Thursday’s contest against the Brewster Whitecaps (2-0).

Pitchers Jacob Stevens (Boston College) and John Signore (Fairfield) are expected to take the mound for Chatham. Stevens had a successful sophomore season with the Eagles, throwing 73 strikeouts — including 28 strikeouts looking — over 83.0 innings. He finished 2017 with a career ERA of 3.89.

Signore paced the Stags this season with an ERA of 3.26, throwing 76 strikeouts over 85.2 innings. He completed his 2016 freshman campaign ranked fourth in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings, with 0.86.

The Gatemen bested Falmouth (0-3) Saturday 4-3, after blanking Harwich (1-2) Thursday 9-0. Wareham opened the season with a 3-0 loss to Hyannis (1-1) Wednesday.

Last season, Chatham posted a 2-2 record against the Gatemen, following a 4-0 sweep of the team in 2015. Wareham has earned seven Cape League titles in program history, winning the championship most recently in 2012.
