Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (4-1) recovered from an early deficit against Cotuit (4-1) Monday, besting the Kettleers 8-4 at Veterans Field.

Cotuit struck first, when Brett Kinneman (North Carolina State) sent Griffin Conine (Duke) home on an RBI single in the top of the fourth.

The game went back and forth in the fifth and sixth innings. Left fielder Bobby Brennan (Palm Beach Atlantic) tied the game with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth, but John Cresto (Santa Clara) answered with a solo home run for Cotuit in the top of the sixth.

Chatham exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) hit a home run — his second of the season — to equalize the game again, before catcher Shea Langeliers (Baylor) notched an RBI double.

Third baseman Jake Palomaki (Boston College) added a two-run RBI single before crossing the plate on a passed ball to put the game out of reach for the Kettleers.

“The hitting was clutch,” said field manager John Schiffner. “Clutch hitting is so important in baseball, and we had that.”

“I had total confidence in the team that we were going to score some runs,” said starting pitcher Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh).

Hammer threw four strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Dan Metzdorf (Boston College), Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) combined for 4.1 innings of relief. DeGroat pitched a scoreless final inning for the save.

Cotuit’s Seth Shuman (Georgia Southern) threw four strikeouts in 5.0 innings, before Austin Kitchen (Coastal Carolina), Luke Shilling (Illinois) and Keyton Gibson (Georgia Tech) completed the game in relief.

“It was a great team effort today,” Hammer said. “Our pitchers were pretty efficient, and our hitting got the job done.”

“The catchers have taken care of the running game, the pitchers are not walking guys...” Schiffner said. “Right now, things are really going well.”

The Anglers will host the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (2-2) tomorrow night at Veterans Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
