Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (5-5) face the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (3-6-1) in a doubleheader this afternoon at McKeon Park, Hyannis. The games mark the teams’ second and third meetings of the season, after Chatham fell to Hyannis 5-3 at Veterans Field Tuesday.
Last night, the Anglers mounted a five-run third inning rally to top the Brewster Whitecaps (4-4-1) 5-4 at Veterans Field. Second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) and right fielder Jacob Olson (South Carolina) led Chatham with two hits and a pair of RBIs each.
Center fielder DJ Artis (Liberty) made a bases-loaded diving catch in the top of the eighth to preserve the score.
“It was a great team win,” Shaw said. “We had a couple tough innings where we battled our way through.”
“We got clutch everything — clutch hitting, clutch defense, clutch pitching,” said manager John Schiffner. “They came back at us, and we wouldn’t let them finish us off.”
Starter Jeff Belge (St. John’s) allowed one earned run with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings, before Dan Metzdorf (Boston College), Ryan Hedrick (Presbyterian) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) combined for 6.0 innings of relief. Metzdorf earned the win with no earned runs and 2 strikeouts over 3.0 innings, while DeGroat posted a scoreless two-inning save.
Pitchers Jacob Stevens (Boston College) and Austin Bergner (North Carolina) will start in games one and two against Hyannis, respectively. Stevens last appeared in the team’s June 18 8-3 victory over the Wareham Gatemen (4-7), allowing no earned runs with three strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Righty Bergner will make his Cape League debut tonight, after completing a successful rookie season with the Tar Heels. He finished 2017 with an ERA of 3.00 and 45 strikeouts over 48.0 innings.
Michael Brettell (Central Michigan) and Ryan Weiss (Wright State) will take the mound for the Harbor Hawks. Brettell last appeared in the team’s June 19 6-2 victory over Wareham, earning the win with no earned runs and three strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Weiss took the 5-3 win over Chatham Tuesday, throwing seven strikeouts with one earned run over 5.0 innings.
Last night, the Harbor Hawks fell to the Bourne Braves (6-2) 8-6, marking the team’s fourth consecutive loss this week. The team dropped games to Bourne 7-6 Friday, Falmouth (5-6) 10-5 Thursday and Wareham 10-2 Wednesday.
