Anglers seek to snap three-game losing streak against Harwich tonight

Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (6-10) host the Harwich Mariners (5-9-1) for the second time this season at Veterans Field tonight. Chatham previously suffered an 11-2 defeat to the team June 23.

Last night, a five-run first inning and three home runs fueled the Falmouth Commodores (9-7) to an 8-3 victory over the Anglers at Veterans Field. The contest marked Chatham’s third consecutive defeat this week, after the team took a pair of losses to Brewster (8-7-1) 11-1 and 6-4 Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Third baseman Antonio Ralat (Alabama — Birmingham), right fielder Donovan Casey (Boston College) and second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) notched one hit and one RBI apiece, but Chatham was unable to generate enough offense to recover from the deficit.

Starter Jack Perkins (Stetson) allowed seven earned runs with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Rodney Hutchison Jr. (North Carolina) dealt two strikeouts over 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, before Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) completed the game.

“There’s … enough good players on that team that the leadership has to take over a little bit,” Schiffner said. “They’re very good players, and right now a lot of them are not playing up to their potentials.”

Left-handed pitcher Jeff Belge (St. John’s) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Belge last appeared in the team’s 5-4 victory over Brewster June 24, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

Matthew Frisbee (North Carolina Greensboro) will start for the Mariners. Frisbee most recently dealt two strikeouts over 3.1 innings in a 7-4 loss to the Orleans Firebirds (10-6) June 24, after opening the season with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings in a 5-2 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (9-6-1) June 17.

Harwich enters the contest on a four-game losing streak, after falling to Orleans 9-1 Friday, Yarmouth-Dennis 12-1 Wednesday and Cotuit (8-8) 3-0 Tuesday. The Mariners dropped the second contest of a doubleheader against Wareham (7-9) 5-1 Sunday.

First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen to the live broadcast here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
