Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (10-7-1) for the second time this season at Veterans Field Monday. A nine-run eighth inning rally previously lifted Yarmouth-Dennis above Chatham 11-8 June 21.
Last night, the Anglers fell to the Harwich Mariners (6-10) 7-3 at the hands of a five-run fifth inning. Despite a solo home run from catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) in the top of the seventh, the team was unable to generate enough offense to recover from the deficit.
“It’s mental,” said manager John Schiffner. “It’s a very difficult game to maintain through the nine innings.”
Starting pitcher Jacob Stevens (Boston College) delivered a strong performance on the mound, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
“I was happy with today’s work,” Stevens said. “Today was a big improvement off my last outing, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Austin Bergner (North Carolina) will take the mound for Chatham. Bergner last appeared as a relief pitcher in the team’s 6-4 defeat at Brewster (8-9-1) June 29, after earning a 9-2 loss with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings against Hyannis (7-10-1) June 25.
Kris Bubic (Stanford) will start for Yarmouth-Dennis. Two of Bubic’s three Cape League appearances to date have resulted in victories, including a 14-3 sweep of the Falmouth Commodores (11-7) June 23, and a 2-1 win over the Orleans Firebirds (12-6) June 19. Bubic is currently ranked fourth in the league with an ERA of 2.16.
Last night, the Red Sox were blanked 4-0 by the Wareham Gatemen (8-10), after posting two consecutive victories 7-4 and 4-3 over Brewster and Bourne, respectively. The team currently seconds Orleans in East Division standings.
The Anglers square off against Orleans in a home-and-home series July 4-5.
