Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (8-11) face East Division leaders, the Orleans Firebirds (13-6) for the second time this season at Eldredge Park, Orleans tonight. Chatham previously fell to Orleans 4-3 June 22.
Last night, a three-run seventh inning and six scoreless innings of pitching from starter Austin Bergner (North Carolina) fueled the Anglers to a 4-0 victory over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (10-8-1). The contest marked the team’s first shutout this season.
“It felt great, just to end up on the positive side of a break,” said first baseman Nick Patten (Delaware). “We’ve been struggling a little bit and it seemed like every bounce, every break was going against us.”
Second baseman Josh Shaw (St. John’s) sent shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) home on a single, before Patten drove two runners home on the double to secure the victory in the seventh.
Relief pitchers Adam Wolf (Louisville), Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) combined to keep the slate scoreless for the Red Sox.
“The pitching was excellent,” said manager John Schiffner. “There weren’t a lot of guys on base, so the flow of the game was really good and it played in our favor because we picked up those extra runs late.”
Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh) will take the mound for the Anglers tonight. Hammer most recently earned Chatham’s 8-2 victory over Bourne (11-8), denying the Braves with five strikeouts over six scoreless innings.
Logan Gilbert (Stetson) will start for Orleans. Gilbert last appeared in the team’s 4-3 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis June 27, throwing three strikeouts with two earned runs over 4.1 innings.
Orleans enters the contest on a nine-game winning streak. The Firebirds bested the Brewster Whitecaps (8-10-1) 3-0 and 5-1 Monday and Sunday respectively, after sweeping Hyannis (7-11-1) 17-3 Saturday.
First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 6:40 p.m. — listen to the live broadcast here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
