Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (12-15) face the Bourne Braves (14-12) for the third time this season at Doran, Park Bourne tonight. The teams currently share a split record, after Chatham answered a 4-3 road loss to the Braves June 15 with an 8-2 victory at Veterans Field June 27.
Last night, the Anglers were unable to capitalize in a 3-1 loss to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks (11-13-2).
Chatham handed Hyannis an early lead in the second, allowing two easy runs on errors.
A single from shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) plated catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) in the bottom of the second to narrow the deficit.
An error and two singles loaded the bases for the Anglers in the fifth, but the team was unable to come in clutch.
“They ran out some pretty good arms, and we just didn’t get the base hits that we needed,” said manager John Schiffner. “We had guys on base, and we just didn’t come through.”
Ryan Olenek’s (Mississippi) solo home run in the ninth secured the victory for the Harbor Hawks.
On the mound, Cameron Bishop (California — Irvine), Andre Pallante (California — Irvine) and Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) combined to limit Hyannis to just one earned run.
Pallante shut down the Harbor Hawks over three scoreless innings, maintaining his blank ERA.
“I’ve been working with my teammates,” Pallante said. “They’ve been really helping me calm down the mechanics, lower my leg kick, keep me in control. That’s been helping me hit the zone more and get outs."
Jack Perkins (Stetson) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Perkins last appeared in the team’s 9-5 victory over Yarmouth-Dennis (14-11-1) July 7, limiting the Red Sox to one earned run over five innings.
The Anglers visit Harwich (9-16-1) Saturday, before facing Bourne again at Veterans Field Sunday.
