Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (15-15) face the Brewster Whitecaps (15-14-1) for the fifth time this season at Veterans Field tonight.
After claiming a 5-4 victory over Brewster June 24, Chatham has suffered three straight losses to the team, including a recent 9-3 defeat at Veterans Field July 12.
A seventh-inning home run from catcher Fabian Pena (Manhattan) powered Chatham to a 2-0 shutout of the Bourne Braves (15-15) at Veterans Field Sunday.
“Fabian Pena basically wins the game and takes the pressure off the 1-0 score going into the last two innings,” said manager John Schiffner. “[It] gives you a chance to do different things – you don’t have to worry about the bunt situation and all those other things.”
Third baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) seized a chance to give Chatham (15-15) an early lead in the first, driving in shortstop Jeremy Pena (Maine) on a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.
“We’re getting a lot of production from everyone because we’re rotating the lineups so much,” Schiffner said.
On the mound, a quartet of Anglers combined to keep the slate clean.
Starter Austin Bergner (North Carolina) shut the Braves down, striking out eight over 5.1 innings.
Left-handed reliever Adam Wolf (Louisville) ended a one-out bases-loaded threat in the sixth, dealing a strikeout and a groundout to leave Bourne stranded.
“It was the perfect situation to bring him [Wolf] in — they had two lefties coming up,” Schiffner said.
Andre Pallante (California) and Josiah Gray (Le Moyne) combined for the final two innings.
Jacob Stevens (Boston College) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Stevens most recently appeared in the team’s 10-4 victory over Cotuit (15-14-1) July 11, allowing three earned runs and striking out three over 3.1 innings.
The Whitecaps edged the Harwich Mariners (10-19-1) 11-10 in eight innings Sunday, after falling to Yarmouth-Dennis (17-11-1) 2-1 Friday and Orleans (20-10) 4-2 Saturday.
The Anglers visit Falmouth (14-15-1) Wednesday, before travelling to Wareham (13-15-1) Thursday.
