Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (16-16) seek their fourth straight victory over the Wareham Gatemen (15-15-1) at Clem Spillane Field, Wareham tonight. Chatham previously swept the team in a home doubleheader June 18, before winning 8-2 on the road July 10.
Last night, the Anglers were unable to mount a comeback in a 7-6 loss to the Falmouth Commodores (15-16-1) at Guv Fuller Field, Falmouth.
Shortstop Jeremy Peña (Maine) put the Anglers on the board in the first, driving in left fielder Josh Stowers (Louisville) and first baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) on a single.
But a five-run showing from the Commodores in the bottom of the first — fueled by Josh Breaux’s (McLennan) grand slam — quickly lifted Falmouth above Chatham.
Right fielder Landon Kay (Furman) plated Peña on a sacrifice fly, and second baseman Jake Palomaki (Boston College) knocked in another run on a single in the fifth.
The team inched closer when Stowers scored on a wild pitch in the in the eighth. Designated hitter Fabian Peña (Manhattan) knocked in another run on a sacrifice fly to bring Chatham within one run of a comeback, but the game was out of reach for the Anglers.
On the mound, four relievers kept the Anglers alive over 6.2 scoreless frames.
Joe Lienhard (Oklahoma State) stepped in for starter Dan Hammer (Pittsburgh), striking out four in 3.2 innings work.
“I’ve been falling behind in counts and walking guys, and tonight I was really trying to just focus on throwing in the zone,” Lienhard said.
Nick Rand (Massachusetts — Lowell), Adam Wolf (Louisville) and Jack DeGroat (Liberty) kept it clean in the final two innings.
Hammer handed Falmouth seven runs in the opening two frames.
Justin Lasko (Massachusetts — Amherst) will make his first outing to the mound tonight since returning to Chatham after his June 22 release. Lasko last started the team’s 11-8 loss against Yarmouth-Dennis (19-11-1) June 22, allowing two earned runs and striking out six over five innings.
Wareham enters the contest on a four-game winning streak, after sweeping Hyannis (11-19-2) 10-1 Tuesday and topping Brewster (15-16-1) 10-3 Wednesday.
