Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (16-17) seek their third straight victory over the Cotuit Kettleers (16-15-1) at Veterans Field tonight. Chatham previously bested the team by tallies of 8-4 June 19, and 10-4 July 11.
Last night, the Anglers fell to the Wareham Gatemen (16-15-1) 1-0 in extra frames. After nine innings yielded a blank scoreboard, Wareham pinch hitter Robbie Metz (George Washington) drove in second basemen Jarren Duran (Long Beach State) on a single to claim the victory in the tenth.
Starter Justin Lasko (Massachusetts — Amherst) made his first trip to the mound since returning to Chatham this week after his release in late June. Lasko shut Wareham down over four blank frames, marking his first scoreless outing of the season.
“After the first inning, I don’t think I threw too many first pitch strikes,” Lasko said. “That’s going to be something that I really focus on this week, getting ahead of guys later on in the game, and staying out in front.”
Rodney Hutchison Jr. (North Carolina) matched Lasko’s scoreless four, before RJ Freure (Pittsburgh) struck out three in the final 1.1 frames.
“A number of these guys have seriously improved,” said manager John Schiffner. “We have sixteen pitchers, and I feel comfortable putting any one of them in at any time.”
Jack Perkins (Stetson) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Perkins most recently appeared in the team’s 4-1 extra-innings victory over Bourne (17-15) June 14, limiting the Braves to one earned run and striking out six over five frames.
Four Anglers will represent the team in the 2017 Friendly’s Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star at Clem Spillane Field, Wareham Saturday. Chatham closes the series against Cotuit at Lowell Park, Cotuit Sunday.
