Chatham, Mass. — The Anglers (17-19) face the Brewster Whitecaps (16-18-2) for the sixth and final time this season at Stony Brook Field, Brewster tonight. Chatham has picked up a pair of victories and three losses to the team, most recently earning a 5-3 win over the Whitecaps July 18.
Last night, a series of early mistakes haunted Chatham in a 7-2 loss to Yarmouth-Dennis (23-11-1). The Red Sox mounted four runs in the third inning on a pair of singles, a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to put victory out of reach for the Anglers.
Third baseman John Aiello (Wake Forest) drove in both of Chatham’s runs, plating left fielder Jake Palomaki (Boston College) twice on singles in the second and sixth.
“We got down early, [had] a couple frustrating at bats, made some mistakes early,” said manager John Schiffner. “It just wasn’t a good night for us — things weren’t clicking.”
Relief pitcher Reiss Knehr (Fordham) stepped in for starter Jeff Belge (St. John’s) after Yarmouth-Dennis mounted back-to-back runs in the third. Knehr allowed just one earned run over 4.2 innings — his longest outing of the season.
Belge allowed five earned runs, walking five and striking out four over 2.1 innings.
Nick Rand (Massachusetts Lowell) and Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) combined to keep the final two frames blank.
Jacob Stevens (Boston College) will take the mound for Chatham tonight. Stevens last faced the Whitecaps July 18, allowing one run (and none earned) with four strikeouts over four innings in the 5-3 victory.
Last night, Brewster blanked Cotuit (17-17-1) 9-0, after falling to Hyannis (13-20-1) 2-1 Sunday. The team is currently tied with Chatham for third place in the East Division.
The Anglers return to Veterans Field to host the Falmouth Commodores (18-17-1) Thursday, before travelling to Yarmouth-Dennis Friday.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The Anglers Extra Pregame Show begins at 4:40 p.m. — listen here: http://bit.ly/ChathamBroadcasts
