100 Days Until 2018 Season Starts

With the college season in full swing, spring training starting up again and the calendar flipped to March, baseball is upon us once again. While the summer may seem far away, it is coming very soon. Today marks 100 days until the start of the 2018 Cape Cod Baseball League season.

The upcoming season represents the start of a new era of Anglers baseball. As always, there will be may new faces on Veterans Field, but this year will be the first in 25 season with a new face leading the Anglers. With legendary skipper John Schiffner stepping down at the end of the 2017, former Oklahoma State manager Tom Holliday has taken the reins as manager of the Anglers.

With 100 days until the start of the 2018 Chatham Anglers season, here are five dates to circle on your Anglers schedule for the upcoming season.

Tuesday June 12 - Opening Day

Opening Day for the Anglers is June 12 when the Wareham Gatemen make the trek across the Sagamore Bridge to play Chatham at Veterans Field. The game will be the first game managed by Holliday.

Historically, the Anglers have been very successful at starting their seasons on the right foot. This decade, Chatham has only lost one Opening Day game, in 2016.

Sunday June 24 - Doubleheader Sunday

June 24 will feature the Anglers only home doubleheader of the season. The first pitch of game one against the Cotuit Kettleers is the only game all season at Veterans Field not scheduled to start at 7:00, with first pitch set for 5:00.

It will also be the only time Cotuit comes to Chatham for the season. In their four meetings last year, the Anglers went 3-1 against the Kettlers.

Sunday July 4 - Fourth of July

After playing at Orleans last season, the annual Anglers-Firebirds fourth of July Day game will take place at Veterans Field this season. Over their last ten meetings on Independence Day, Chatham and Orleans have both won five games each.

This is also the first of six times the Anglers face their rivals to the north this campaign. Last season, the Anglers struggled against the Firebirds. Chatham went 1-5 against Orleans in the regular season and then lost the East Division Semifinals two games to one to the Firebirds.

Sunday July 22 - All-Star Game

While the 2018 CCBL All-Star Game will not be taking place in Chatham, it will be held right next door at Whitehouse Field in Harwich. In last year’s All-Star Game held in Wareham, the East Division won 5-3.

Wednesday August 1 - Home Finale

The Anglers end the 2018 season with a home-and-home series with Orleans. On Wednesday August 1, Chatham host the Firebirds in their regular season home finale, while Orleans will play host the following night in the regular season finale.

Much like the Fourth of July matchup between the two teams, it has become a tradition for the two teams to face off in the final two games of the season. Since 2009, the two teams have ended their seasons with the two games against each other. In these games, Chatham has struggled, winning only four games and losing 13 with one tie.

Bonus: Playoff Baseball

The CCBL playoffs will start on Saturday, August 4. The top four teams in each division make the playoffs. There are three rounds to the playoffs: a best-of-three division semifinals, best-of-three division finals and a best-of-three championship series.

It has been 20 years since the Anglers have won a CCBL championship. In 1998, the Anglers went up against the Gatemen in the championship and won the series 3-2.

As a reminder, if you cannot make it to the ballpark for a game, every Chatham game can be streamed online on the Anglers Radio Network.
