On Sunday, the Cape Cod Baseball League announced the 2018 inductees to the Cape League Hall of Fame via Twitter. Among the six inductees is long-time Anglers manager John “Schiff” Schiffner, who, after 25 seasons at the helm in Chatham, was replaced by Tom Holliday in August 2017.

Schiffner, who spent 34 years coaching in the CCBL, finished his tenure as the winningest coach in the league’s history, a record he has held since 2007. He led the A’s to two league championships in 1996 and 1998, six division titles and 15 playoff appearances.

Prior to his time in Chatham, Schiffner spent three summers on the Cape as a player for the Harwich Mariners from 1974 to 1976, before joining the team’s coaching staff for the 1977 season. Later that year, then-Chatham manager Ed Lyons invited Schiffner to join the A’s staff, an offer he quickly accepted.

From 1978 to 1982, Schiffner acted as an assistant coach for the A’s, marking his first stint in Chatham. Eight years later, after working as a scout for the Montreal Expos, Schiffner returned to Chatham, again as an assistant coach. On June 7, 1993, Schiffner became the manager of the A’s after then-manager Rich Hill accepted a coaching position at the University of San Francisco.

During his 25-year tenure, Schiffner managed over 120 future major leaguers along with 26 first-round draft picks. To many, he is the face and voice of Cape Cod Baseball.

Alongside Schiffner, five others were inducted into the Cape League Hall of Fame as part of the 2018 class. Inductees include long-time pitching coach Arthur “Ace” Adams, host Barbara Ellsworth, writer Peter Gammons, relief pitcher Craig Hansen and former CCBL Playoff MVP Mark Sweeney.
