4 Anglers selected in the MLB Draft 1st round, 35 in total

Four players who played for the Chatham Anglers within the last two seasons were drafted in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft on Monday night. Throughout the 40-round MLB Draft from June 3-5, a total of 35 current and former Chatham players were selected by Major League organizations.

20 different teams selected current or former Chatham players in the draft, the most being Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers with three each.

Day One

Baylor catcher Shea Langeliers (‘17) was the first Anglers’ player chosen, drafted ninth overall by the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. Langeliers recently broke the record for most RBIs (11) in one game of the NCAA tournament against Nebraska Omaha on Saturday.

Langeliers finished his junior season with the Bears this weekend, where he posted a .304 average and a .904 OPS. He was named a freshman All-American in 2017, and a second-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 after his 2018 season.

While he played for Chatham, Langeliers was a CCBL All-Star, and hit .234 with a .793 OPS in 145 plate appearances.

Two picks later, the Toronto Blue Jays selected pitcher Alek Manoah (‘18), a junior from West Virginia. Manoah was the Mountaineers’ ace in 2019 and aided WVU in hosting its first regional in school history.

He finished the 2019 campaign with a 9-4 record, striking out 144 batters in 104.1 innings. His 2.00 ERA and 0.88 WHIP was 17th and 10th in the nation, respectively. The Miami native played for the Anglers in 2018, pitching 33.1 innings and posting a 2.70 ERA and 0.79 WHIP.

Greg Jones (‘18) just completed his sophomore year at UNC Wilmington, and was drafted 22nd overall by the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Jones hit .341 with a 1.034 OPS in 2019 for the Seahawks.

Last season for Chatham, Jones stole 21 bases in 43 games and tallied the third most hits of all Anglers players.

Michael Busch (‘18) was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers at No. 31 overall. He was one of Chatham’s top hitters last summer with a .322 average and 1.017 OPS, and just completed his junior year at North Carolina. Busch hit .290 with a 1.008 OPS for the Tar Heels and was the co-team leader in home runs with 16, good for top-30 in the nation. No Chatham players were chosen in the second round on Day 1.

Day Two

Georgia Tech’s Tristin English (‘18) was picked No. 93 by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He hit .303 for the Anglers and posted a 2.21 ERA on the mound for Chatham.

The Anglers went back to back with the next pick, when the Washington Nationals chose Drew Mendoza (‘18) with pick No. 94. Mendoza hit two home runs for Chatham in 2018 and posted a 1.113 OPS for Florida State this season. The Seminoles will play LSU in the Super Regional round, beginning on Friday.

Chatham’s 2017 team had its second draftee in the fourth round, when the St. Louis Cardinals selected UC Irvine’s Andre Pallante (‘17) 125th overall. Pallante threw 94 innings for the Anteaters last season, posting a 2.68 ERA.

That selection began a run of Anglers’ draftees, as he was the first of five selections in a 15-pick stretch, including two back-to-backs.

Washington’s Nick Kahle (‘18) was chosen by Milwaukee with pick No. 133. Kahle dominated in the PAC-12 this year, leading the Huskies with a .339 batting average and a 1.038 OPS. He took 59 walks and struck out just 28 times.

Georgia Tech’s Kyle McCann (‘18) will be an ‘A’ again after he was drafted No. 134 by Oakland. McCann hit .299 last season for the Yellow Jackets with a 1.142 OPS and 23 HRs.

Illinois State’s John Rave (‘18) was chosen by Kansas City with the second pick of the fifth round, No. 139 overall. Rave started all 62 games for the Redbirds and hit .297.

With the following pick, the Chicago White Sox selected Boston College’s Dan Metzdorf (‘17). Metzdorf was BC’s ace in 2019, logging 82.1 innings and a 2.30 ERA.

Cleveland selected Pitcher Hunter Gaddis (‘18) in the fifth round, 189th overall, after Gaddis posted a 2.00 ERA for the Anglers last summer.

The Texas Rangers selected Cody Bradford (‘18), from Baylor, with the 175th overall pick in the sixth round. Bradford had just two appearances for the A’s, but he struck out eight in eight innings pitched.

Auburn pitcher Davis Daniel (‘18) was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels in the seventh round after he posted a 2.29 ERA for Chatham last summer.

The Pittsburgh Pirates drafted USC utility man Blake Sabol (‘18) who led the 2018 Anglers in batting average at .340 and was an East Division CCBL All-Star.

Two-year Chatham pitcher Austin Bergner (‘17, ‘18) was chosen by the Detroit Tigers with pick No. 262 after Bergner posted a 2.14 ERA and struck out 38 batters in 33 innings in his second trip.

Wake Forest’s Colin Peluse (‘18) pitched seven innings for Chatham in 2018, striking out 10 batters. On Tuesday, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics.

Day Three

John McMillon (‘18) was the first Chatham player off the board on Wednesday, which was day three of the MLB Draft (Rounds 11-40). The Detroit Tigers selected McMillan, a Texas Tech outfielder.

Two-year A’s player Dan Hammer (‘17, ‘18) was chosen by the Baltimore Orioles. He started in the CCBL All-Star game in 2018.

Vanderbilt pitcher Zach King ('18) was picked by the Miami Marlins in the 13th round. King threw 7.2 innings for the Anglers last year.

In the 15th round, Greg Veliz (‘18) of Miami was drafted by the Angels. He was an All-Star for the Anglers last season and posted 33 strikeouts in 22 innings last summer.

Jeff Belge, a two year player in 2017 and 2018, was chosen by the Dodgers in the 18th round, 551st overall. The St. John’s pitcher threw 40 innings last summer, striking out 51.

North Carolina slugger Ashton McGee (‘17, ‘18) drove in seven home runs for the Anglers last summer. On Wednesday, Milwaukee drafted him in the 18th round.
