Game 44 preview: Orleans at Chatham

The losing streak is over. Chatham has clinched the East Division. And there’s one game left in the Cape League’s regular season. The Anglers face Orleans for a third straight night at Veterans Field starting at 7 p.m.

Chatham is coming off a thrilling victory over the Firebirds that featured five lead changes and four ties. Down 7-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the A’s loaded the bases for Kaden Polcovich (Oklahoma State), who hit a bases-clearing double. Two batters later, Jamal O’Guinn (USC) walked the game off on a bloop single to right.

“To get that win before the playoffs, before we start a run for a championship,” Tyler Doanes (West Virginia) said. “That's special.”

The A’s are locked into a playoff matchup with No. 4 seed Harwich and Orleans will host Yarmouth-Dennis in the postseason.

“Tomorrow’s game means nothing,” Holliday said. “We need to figure out a way to treat it that way and not get anybody hurt.”

Probable pitchers

Because of a looming playoff series starting Friday, Holliday has planned for a collection of position players to throw on the mound.

Player to watch

Hueston Morrill (Oklahoma State) has been one of the A’s best hitters to end the season. But that’s not the reason he’s noteworthy on Thursday.

Morrill was recruited as a two-way player for the Cowboys and his fastball can reach 90 mph. He’ll be a pitching option for Holliday as the A’s try to preserve their bullpen. Morrill allowed four runs in 1.1 innings against Falmouth on July 11.

Stat to know — 8-7

Chatham and Orleans have finished three of their five matchups with a 8-7 score. All three times, the A’s have won, including Wednesday’s come-from-behind victory.

Season series

The Anglers lead the season series, 4-1, and have outscored the Firebirds, 30-26. Its lone loss came on Tuesday, a 4-0 loss at Eldredge Park.
