Tuesday, July 04, 2023
Chatham snapped a two-game losing streak Monday night with a 10–6 victory over Harwich. The victory marked the Anglers’ second win against the Mariners in the last four days. Initially trailing 4–2 after the opening four innings, Chatham produced a four-run fifth frame and never fell behind again.
The A’s will now look to string together consecutive wins for the first time in 2023 at Orleans on July 4. The Firebirds enter the contest following home wins against Wareham and Hyannis and currently sit at third place in the East Division. Tuesday’s meeting at Eldredge Park will be the second between the two sides—Chatham won the first 2–0.
Here’s everything you need to know before Chatham’s (6–13–1 East) Independence Day showdown with Orleans (10–10–0 East).
Probable Pitchers
Miles Langhorne (Charlotte): In his last feature facing Bourne, Langhorne started strong, tallying six strikeouts, but eventually gave up three earned runs in an 8–2 loss. Through three appearances this season, Langhorne averages a 6.00 ERA in nine total innings pitched.
Evan Truitt (Charleston Southern): Boasting a 1–0 record in three outings this summer, Truitt possesses a 2.45 ERA and nine strikeouts while only committing three walk. Though the Firebirds suffered a 4–3 loss the last time Truitt took the bump, he shut out the Commodores in three innings pitched.
Chatham Players To Watch
Lyle Miller-Green (Austin Peay): Miller-Green spearheaded Chatham’s bounceback win over Harwich with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. A formidable power-hitter, he boasts a team-best three home runs and nine RBIs across 14 total hits this season.
Carter Trice (NC State): Trice registered his first home run in an Anglers uniform against the Mariners on Monday as well. In 16 at-bats this summer, Trice leads Chatham with a .375 batting average and has struck out just four times.
Orleans Players To Watch
Jo Oyama (California Irvine): Boasting a .364 batting average in 55 at-bats, Oyama is currently riding a three-game hit streak. He’s garnered a team-high 11 walks and has tacked on a rare six triples. Against Hyannis on Monday, Oyama notched one of his six RBIs this season in an 8–6 win.
Johnny Olmstead (Southern California): On July 2, Olmstead enjoyed a three-hit, two-RBI outing en route to a 7–6 victory over Wareham. Though the righty slugger couldn’t find a barrel facing the Harbor Hawks, his two home runs and 10 total RBIs lead Orleans.
Number To Know: 1
In the first matchup between Chatham and Orleans, the Anglers allowed a season-low one hit in their only shutout victory of the season. For the Firebirds, the loss marked their worst offensive performance in 2023. Orleans hasn’t produced just one hit in a game since.
Last Time They Played
Chatham shut out Orleans in a 2–0 victory at Veterans Field on June 13. After a tie and a loss to open the 2023 season, pitchers Brody Brecht and Matt Wilkinson led the Anglers to their first win of the summer.
Brecht, who started against the Firebirds, tallied five strikeouts in four innings while Wilkinson fanned eight batters on his own in relief. On the offensive end, Chatham recorded a single run in both the third and seventh innings, respectively.
