Game 27 Preview: Chatham at Wareham
In the bottom of the sixth inning at Veterans Field, Chatham’s matchup with Brewster was rained out. The outing marked the ninth time this season where an Anglers’ game was affected due to inclement weather.

With West Virginia’s JJ Wetherholt at the plate, a lightning delay was issued by home plate umpire Dave Martinez. Then, a sudden wave of heavy rain sent both teams sprinting toward their respective dugouts.

Over the first five-and-a-half frames, Chatham consistently kept up with the Whitecaps. But, after it notched two runs in the bottom of the fifth to draw within one, torrential downpour halted the A’s promising comeback attempt, handing them a 6–5 loss.

On Monday, Chatham will travel to Wareham. While the Anglers are coming off a slim, one-score defeat, the Gatemen saw their showdown with Bourne postponed because of rain. Wareham defeated Orleans 5–4 on Saturday, however.

Here’s everything you need to know before Chatham (7–18–1 East) takes on Wareham (11–16–2 West).

Probable Starters

Zach Harris (Georgia Southern): Harris possesses a 6.75 ERA throughout 2.2 innings for Chatham this summer. Across his first two appearances, the righty gave up just one hit but allowed two earned runs against Hyannis on July 14. Monday’s affair will be Harris’ first start with the Anglers.

Yoel Tejeda (Florida): Tejeda, a recent Florida State commit, has allowed a run in each of his five outings this season. Though he appeared on the mound to close out a 8–4 victory against Chatham on June 23, Wareham has failed to win a game with Tejeda since. Tejeda sports a 5.78 ERA with seven strikeouts in 7.1 total innings.

Chatham Players To Watch

Nolan Schubart (Oklahoma State): One of three Chatham players selected as 2023 Cape League All-Stars, Schubart ended a four-game hitless skid on Saturday with a three-run homer at Falmouth. This past season at Oklahoma State, the rising sophomore generated a .338 batting average and 74 RBIs.

Kaeden Kent (Texas A&M): Joining Schubart in this summer’s All-Star Game, Kent’s .289 batting average leads all qualifying Angler batters. In 22 hits, the Aggie has driven home six RBIs but saw a potential three-game hit streak snatched away after coming up empty at the plate against Brewster.

Wareham Players To Watch

Nick Mclain (Arizona State): Sticking with the ongoing All-Star theme, Mclain’s call-up to the ASG at Whitehouse Field stems from his team-best four home runs. The Sun Devil has recorded hits in each of his last three games including a moonshot facing Falmouth on July 11.

Grant Hussey (West Virginia): Hussey leads the Gatemen with 22 RBIs this season and joins Mclain to make up half of Wareham’s 2023 All-Star honorees. Hussey has garnered a .257 batting average and enjoyed a whopping four-RBI showing in a 9–8 win over Bourne on July 6.

Number To Know: 39

Through 55 total games between Chatham and Wareham, the two teams have mustered a combined 39 points. For reference, Cape Cod Baseball League leaders, Cotuit, hold 44 points itself. Both the Anglers and the Gatemen sit at the bottom of their respective divisions—in fifth place each—with a lowly 18 total wins.

Last Time They Played

Chatham and Wareham last matched up on June 23 at Spillane Field. The Gatemen started off hot, lighting up Chatham’s starting pitcher Tanner Witt for six runs across the opening two innings.

The Anglers were never able to recover from their sluggish start in an eventual 8–4 loss.
