Game 9 Preview: Chatham at Harwich
For the fourth straight game this season, Chatham followed up a win with a loss. Following a 9-2 win over Falmouth Saturday, the Anglers fell 4-1 in their ensuing matchup against Cotuit.
Austin Overn (USC) provided Chatham with an instant boost, blasting a lead-off first-inning home run on the first pitch he saw to put the A’s in front. The Kettleers responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to level the game at 1-1. But five scoreless innings followed. Chatham starter Kyson Witherspoon (Oklahoma) threw just 54 pitches without allowing an earned run as Chatham and Cotuit remained level into the seventh inning.
A three-run bomb from Tanner Thach off Hayden Murphy (Auburn) blew the game open in the seventh inning. Chatham’s offense didn’t produce a hit past the fourth inning and nor could it produce a base runner.
Next up for the Anglers is another game on the road against Harwich. The Mariners are coming off a comeback 10-8 win over Falmouth where they scored nine runs across the seventh and eighth innings.
Here’s everything to know prior to Chatham’s (4-4, East) matchup at Harwich (5-3, East) Monday night:
Jacob Weaver (Austin Peay) takes the mound for the second time this summer. Weaver had trouble in his first start with the Anglers, letting up five earned runs in two innings of work against Hyannis. The righty allowed a three-run home run to Zach Yorke in the first inning and Chatham ended up falling 11-0.
Harwich will send out Ryan DeSanto (Saint Joseph’s), who will also make his second start of the summer. Though, DeSanto’s first outing garnered different results compared to Weaver. The lefty pitched 4.2 scoreless innings on June 17, allowing just three hits and fanning three batters. DeSanto struck out 88 batters in 77 innings this past college baseball season while accumulating a 3.72 ERA.
Overn has been Chatham’s hottest hitter over the past two games. After a three-strikeout performance in a loss against Brewster, Overn drove in five of Chatham’s nine runs as it defeated Falmouth. Then came his lead-off shot against Cotuit to continue his hot streak. Overn leads the Anglers with a 1.010 OPS and seven RBIs, cementing his spot at the top of Chatham’s lineup.
Chase Krewson (UCF) was activated by Chatham Monday and made his first appearance against Cotuit. He pinch hit for Ike Irish (Auburn) at the designated hitter's spot in the top of the sixth inning. Even though Krewson struck out in both of his at-bats, he flashed his potential with Duke this season. Krewson started 35 games for the Blue Devils and drove in 22 runs before transferring to UCF in the offseason.
Michael Anderson has been the best hitter in the Cape Cod Baseball League this season, leading the league in a litany of offensive categories. Anderson’s 13 hits, three home runs and .464 batting average are the best in those categories while his 11 RBIs rank second. The first baseman is coming off a season where he hit 13 home runs with Rhode Island as a freshman.
Anderson’s partner in crime on offense is Jake Ogden. Outside of Anderson, Ogden has been Harwich’s best player this season. Ogden has registered eight hits, drove in nine runs and struck out six times this season, three less than Anderson.
Harwich’s eight home runs are the second most in the CCBL this season, half of which came in its previous contest to come back from a four-run deficit. Ryan Weingartner blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning to tie the game 5-5.
Anderson crushed a solo shot to center field while homers from Robbie Burnett and Ogden made it four in just two innings for Harwich. Chatham is third in the CCBL with six homers, four of which have come from Overn and John Bay (Austin Peay).
After getting eliminated from playoff contention the day before, Chatham faced Harwich on July 30, 2023. The Anglers dismantled the Mariners 11-0 for their first victory of a four-game winning streak to end the season.
