Game 11 Preview: Chatham vs. Wareham
For the first time all season, Chatham lost two games in a row. Looking to avoid a third straight defeat, the Anglers faced Hyannis, which handed them an 11-0 loss just eight days before.
Amid a fog-filled Veterans Field, the A’s scored four runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Aiva Arquette’s (Washington) three-run blast gave Chatham a solid cushion. But as the mist grew thicker, the umpires called managers Jeremy “Sheets” Sheetinger and Mitch Karraker for a meeting. Initially, the result was a 15-minute delay but with the fog not dissipating, the game was called in the fifth inning, handing the Anglers a 5-2 win.
Chatham will attempt to win two straight games for the first time this summer when it takes on Wareham at Veterans Field Thursday. The Anglers defeated the Gatemen via run rule on June 15 in their first game of the season.
Here’s everything to know ahead of Chatham’s (5-5, East) home matchup with Wareham (8-2, West) Thursday:
Liam Paddack (Gonzaga) will get his second start of the summer with the Anglers as he looks to follow up a stellar first outing. The hard-throwing lefty was the only returner for Chatham in 2024 and his experience showed against Orleans on June 20.
Paddack dominated the Firebirds lineup, allowing just one hit — a home run to Roch Cholowsky — across 5.1 innings. The outing was the longest by a Chatham starter this season. Paddack fanned seven batters while walking just two as the Anglers snuck by Orleans 2-1. Sheetinger said postgame that his team wouldn’t have won without Paddack’s efficient start.
On the other side is Yoel Tejeda Jr., who will make his first appearance for Wareham. The righty from Florida State is an imposing figure, standing at 6-foot-8. Tejeda Jr. had mixed success across his 19.2 innings in 2024. He struck out 15 batters but walked 17 and allowed 13 earned runs.
John Bay (Austin Peay) has clearly been Chatham’s best power hitter so far this year. Bay blasted his third home run of the year — a solo shot off Luke Nichols — in Chatham’s win over Hyannis. The outfielder currently is second in the Cape Cod Baseball League with a 1.222 OPS while leading the Anglers in slugging percentage (.739) and getting on base at a team-high .483 rate.
While Bay’s power has stood out, Arquette’s well-rounded at-bats have been a plus for the Anglers. Entering Wednesday, Arquette’s 10 hits only trailed Austin Overn (USC), but all of which went for singles. Arquette finally showed off his power by lacing his first home run of the season to center field against Hyannis. The shortstop now leads the Anglers in batting average (.379).
Wareham third baseman Triston Gray has been a standout this summer. Gray’s 36 at-bats are the most by any Wareham player, but he’s been productive, registering a team-high 12 hits. The Fresno State product’s eight RBIs lead the Gatemen and his .333 batting average is second on the team.
Antonio Jimenez may not be one of Wareham’s most volume hitters, but he brings a lot of pop to its lineup. Two of the shortstop’s six hits have resulted in home runs and he also has two doubles this season. Jimenez’s 1.042 OPS and .609 slugging percentage are both the second most on the Gatemen.
Wareham didn’t record a single extra-base hit the first time it faced Chatham, but now it leads the CCBL in doubles with 21. The Gatemen have caught fire since losing to the Anglers, rattling off eight wins in their last nine games, much of which has had to do with their offense.
