Game 14 Preview: Chatham at Brewster
In the aftermath of its 10-3 loss at Bourne Saturday, Chatham received a surprise 48-hour rest.
The Anglers’ home matchup versus Harwich the following day was canceled due to rain — with a makeup game scheduled for July 11. Then, the entire Cape Cod Baseball League was off Monday for the league’s annual Fenway Park Workout.
It was a much-needed break for Chatham. It’s lost each of its last three contests, scoring no more than three runs in any instance. First-year manager Jeremy “Sheets” Sheetinger’s squad now searches to break the skid against Brewster. The Whitecaps are tied with the Anglers in record, though the former has a leg up on head-to-head results (1-0).

Probable Starters
Karson Ligon (Mississippi State) is set for his first start of the summer. He was previously supposed to start Sunday versus Harwich, but the game was postponed.
The righty is one of two Chatham hurlers to reach the 100-mph mark. Ligon hit triple digits against Harwich on June 24 during a scoreless seventh inning. So far with the Anglers, Ligon has yet to concede an earned run across three innings. He’s registered five strikeouts and hasn’t walked anybody.
Vanderbilt product Luke Guth is projected to start for the Whitecaps. The right-hander has struggled across his first two appearances this summer, posting a 10.13 ERA and suffering a .318 batting average against. Tuesday will be Guth’s second start of the year. This past college baseball season, Guth tallied a 5.40 ERA through 12 outings as a freshman.

High-power outfielder John Bay (Austin Peay) stands out among Chatham’s top hitters thus far. He boasts a .576 slugging percentage and a .976 OPS with a team-best three home runs. His seven RBIs also rank third on the A’s. On any given day, Bay will be one of the prime areas of focus for opposing pitchers as the plug of Chatham’s offense.
Elsewhere, Overn is a clear star within the Cape Cod Baseball League so far. He’s registered a team-high 17 hits — which rank first in the entire league — and blasted two homers with a 1.017 OPS. He embarked on a 3-for-4 day last time out versus Bourne, driving in one of the Anglers’ two runs and plating the other one himself off a wild pitch.
Brewster Players To Watch
Andrew Fischer stands out among Brewster’s heaviest hitters. His .919 OPS ranks third on the team, he’s belted three home runs and totaled 12 RBIs. His 11 walks issued are also tied for the most on the Whitecaps. His play in the Cape league should be even more notable going forward, as Fischer entered the transfer portal after spending 2024 with Ole Miss.
Batting in the two-hole last time out against Chatham, Whitecaps’ catcher Ryder Helfrick came through in the clutch. Helfrick roped a two-run double that scattered just inside the foul line on the third-base side. It gave Brewster a 7-4 lead in the eighth inning, which allowed it to cruise to a win. Over the course of the season, he’s accumulated a CCBL-best four homers while driving in the second-most RBIs of the year — 14.
